Job Description

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Drive a zero-harm culture across all SED activities by embedding safety as a non-negotiable foundation of planning, execution, and stakeholder engagement. Ensure disciplined application of the Safety and Health framework through clearly defined standards, controls, and accountabilities across employees, contractors, and community-facing programmes.
  • Ensure that all SED initiatives are executed within a risk-controlled environment, balancing development impact with operational safety considerations, and reinforcing behaviours that protect people, assets, reputation, and the organisation’s social license to operate.
  • Lead by example in fostering a culture of accountability, vigilance, and care, where safety is actively owned, continuously improved, and embedded in decision-making at all levels of function.
  • Safeguard the activities undertaken contributes to addressing the developmental priorities of the community and key stakeholders, especially the local government’s development agenda, for upliftment and improvement in community lives.
  • Ensure the team, site management and staff understand the SED component of the Valterra Platinum Social Standard.
  • Ensure stakeholder involvement through participatory and collaborative processes in the identification and prioritization of the key elements of those plans.
  • Follow the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) management process outlined in the SED section of the Valterra Platinum Social Standard. This will require the role-holder to ensure the proposed programmes and projects comply with the key development steps.
  • Ensure this takes place in compliance with the new requirements for socio-economic development defined in the Valterra Platinum Social Standard.
  • Take responsibility and accountability for the SED plan and efficient execution.
  • Manage the process to develop SED plans that are compliant with the requirements of the Valterra Platinum Social Standard specifically align to the key SED principles.
  • Oversee, maintain and improve the relationship with communities, traditional authorities, local government and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of the site SLPS to ensure the site complies with all relevant legislative requirements.
  • Oversee the development of project frameworks (SoW, ToC, ToRs) and continuously strengthen monitoring and evaluation to ensure delivery of intended outcomes and impact.
  • Engage with relevant Business Partners SED staff whenever necessary to gain their input and agreement with the SED plan.
  • Support the integration of other programmes including but not limited to Collaborative Regional Development initiatives, Valterra Platinum Hubs, Community Trusts, into the site’s SED strategy and plan.
  • Support the implementation of the Resilient Community stretch goals of the Sustainable Mining Plan through ensuring integration in SED plan.
  • Be responsible for preparing for and undertaking the year-end Valterra Platinum Social Standard assessment.
  • Take responsibility to ensure that communities in the Area of Influence remain informed and are engaged and involved in the decision making around SED activities of mine.
  • Provide feedback on current and likely future community SED needs and wants to the GM and other site functions, including People & Organisation, Supply Chain/Procurement, Environment.
  • Provide updated reports to VP and Business Partners as required.
  • Monitor the development, implementation, and the reporting on SLPs, Mining Charter, BBBEE in compliance with the relevant legislations.
  • Put in place sufficient physical and financial resources and coordinate delivery of Sustainable Mining Plan commitments relevant to discipline.
  • Manage compliance with environmental and social requirements as relevant to discipline, including commitments to stakeholders.
  • Identify environmental and social risks triggered by our impact on discipline and propose mitigation techniques to be incorporated in the asset risk management approach.
  • Identify environmental and social opportunities relevant for work area and then introduce and monitor sustainability initiatives.
  • Implement a purpose-driven, high-performing culture that is aligned with the company values, is inclusive and promotes diversity, supports engagement and fosters continuous improvement to work processes.

This role is at a Band 5 level reporting to the GM External Relations & Sustainability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ Degree: Social Science, Development Studies, Economics, Public Administration or equivalent in Social Impact Management
  • Advantageous: Social Science, Development Studies, Economics, Public Administration or equivalent in Social Impact Management
  • Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s licence

Experience, technical knowledge and skills required:

  • Minimum 10 years relevant Social experience
  • Experience of delivering strategic social management plans for businesses and operations.
  • Experience of managing socio-economic development interventions.
  • Experience in Mining Industry and regulatory requirements
  • Strong knowledge of socio-economic development and/or international development.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in one or more of these areas: economic analysis, socio-economic development, value chain development, enterprise development, entrepreneurship.
  • Practical experience of working at site level in developing or developed economies, in a company, consultancy or international development institution.
  • Identification of new work methods to ensure productive and safe work and achieve plans
  • Monitoring of benchmarks and identification of performance gaps
  • Management of work packages across a portfolio of project activities
  • Leading and managing through crises and times of transformation and change
  • Delivery of safe operational performance over 3–12-month time horizon
  • Establishment of a culture within teams in which safety and health is paramount and that results in zero fatalities
