Job Description

The Section Engineering Manager, appointed in terms of the OHSA (Section 2.7) or MHSA (Section 2.13.1), provides overall management and is accountable for engineering and asset management across a clearly defined portion of an operational complex (mining or processing).

Job responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Safety

  • Create a safety culture through productive and authorised operational systems/processes that allow all employees (including contracting partners) to provide their output in a risk-controlled environment. Oversee consistent application of Safety & Health principles in all discipline interactions and take personal responsibility for safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities. Ensure leading indicators are achieved and that proactive management actions are implemented based on these indicators to drive performance and mitigate risk.

Performance and Delivery 

  • Provides visible felt leadership in safety, sustainable development, and adherence to Valterra Platinum values.
  • Contributes to the development of strategic and operational plans and is directly accountable for the effective execution thereof within the area of accountability.
  • Directs, implements, and monitors engineering, maintenance, risk, and operational plans to deliver business objectives within the area of responsibility.
  • Provides and oversees engineering services, infrastructure (including roads, power, and water), and equipment availability, ensuring these are fit-for-purpose and maintained to meet operational requirements within the section.
  • Leads and manages resources (labour, spares, suppliers, and contractors) to achieve production targets and support project delivery within the area of accountability.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable legal, environmental, occupational health and safety, and risk management requirements, as well as relevant best practices.
  • Ensures adherence to engineering and asset management standards and specifications within the area of accountability.
  • Monitors the health of the engineering discipline and takes appropriate action to ensure the function is adequately staffed with the required capabilities, including mentoring, succession planning, and development of team members.
  • Develops, sets, and manages engineering and maintenance budgets for the area of accountability, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation and financial discipline.
  • Accountable for the implementation and embedding of key strategic initiatives within the area of accountability, including the operating model, asset management practices, and SIB deployment. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Implementation and optimisation of CMMS within the area of responsibility
    • Establishing and applying equipment service strategies
    • Conducting analysis and continuous improvement initiatives, including root cause analysis (RCA)
    • Implementation and optimisation of work management systems
    • Shutdown planning and optimisation within the section
    • Asset integrity management and critical spares strategies, including input into SIB capital applications to de-risk the area of accountability
    • Development of performance measures to monitor plant and equipment effectiveness
    • Embedding continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., 5S, Lean principles)
  • Establishes and maintains effective stakeholder relationships with key functions (including Learning, Supply Chain, and Projects) to ensure alignment with engineering requirements and operational expectations.
  • Leads and drives continuous improvement and asset optimisation initiatives within the area of accountability to enhance engineering performance and reliability.
  • Leads or escalates to corporate technical experts, as required, to resolve complex or recurring equipment and process failures.
  • Ensures the effective management of engineering documentation within the operation, including maintaining a structured repository of drawings, manuals, specifications, parts lists, and OEM information.
  • Leads the planning and execution of SIB and capital projects within the area of accountability, in collaboration with the Site PMO, ensuring alignment with operational requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory, legislative and permitting requirements.   

Qualifications

  • BSc / BEng / National Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Relevant Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) (Mines and Works or Factories)

Certification

  • Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s license

Technical Knowledge (Experience)

  • 5–7 years of post‑qualification engineering experience, including supervisory responsibilities, with at least 3 years served in a formally appointed role relevant to this position considered an advantage.
  • Experience in underground mining and/or processing environment will be advantageous.
  • Proven ability in large Capex project management.
  • Proven ability in minimising Operational and Business Risk.
  • Proven ability in protecting and managing capital assets.
  • Risk management techniques and critical controls.
  • Experience in SAP: Planned Maintenance.

Technical Skills

  • Expert skill in work execution efficiency
  • Proficient skill in stakeholder engagements.
  • Proficient skills in applying business improvement techniques.
