Description of Work

This position is located in the District 1 Resident Engineers Office in Robeson County. This position will perform routine inspection on a variety of contractor construction projects to ensure general compliance with contract plans, specifications, and standard drawings. Maintain daily pay records and diaries in accordance with NCDOT Standards and Specifications. Ensure all materials incorporated into the project are sampled / tested per NCDOT guidelines. Ability to attain NCDOT certifications for asphalt roadway paving, concrete testing, density, Aggregate and Borrow Pit sampling, and other certification as required/needed. Monitor all subcontractors on project to ensure adequate DBE or MB/WB participation per the contract. Perform labor interviews.

Additional Expectations:
Promote a safe working environment. Possess knowledge and understanding of general concepts and practices used in highway construction and design. Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, and specifications. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Perform entry level materials sampling, testing and inspection. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, management, and general public. Knowledge of mathematics (Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry). Ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures. Accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Must be able to legally drive a state vehicle. Safety toe footwear required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC07 $37,377 - $65,408

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad, and software
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and /or construction surveying.

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
