Description of Work

Position will function as a Transportation Worker IV in the Durham County Maintenance Unit located in Durham NC. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Position will also serve as lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Work will include, but is not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. Employees in this position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Additional Expectations:

Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. Ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Safety toe footwear is required.

The selected Employee will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01andALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.**

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC08 / $39,244 - $68,679

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
  • Experience in one of the following:  shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations
  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience of Requirement:

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
