The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

Reporting directly to the Region Security Coordinator in the Central Region Office, this position will be responsible for managing and supervising the transportation section assigned to the Central Region. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Providing guidance and direction to ensure custody, security and control of offenders who are being transported between designated locations.

2. Ensuring incarcerated individuals are transported between various locations to include, but not limited to, jails, courts, prisons, and medical facilities, while maintaining the security and well-being of the offender throughout the transport process.

3. Ensuring Transportation Officers are fully aware of the approved level of independent decision-making authority within established guidelines.

4. Recommending and implementing standard operating procedures for the transportation of offenders within the region.

5. Coordinating the transportation of offenders within the Region to ensure transport is achieved in a timely manner and within policy guidelines.

6. Overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.

7. Developing schedules to ensure transportation requirements are met, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.

8. Completing departmental reports (i.e., disciplinary, use of force, incident, grievances, etc.) within designated time frames.

9. Conducting daily inspections in the assigned area of responsibility and reporting any irregularities and initiating corrective action, as necessary.

10. Ensuring shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring safety and security procedures are enforced.

11. This position is designated as “Mandatory” and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

About Central Region Office

Central Region Office (CRO) is 1 of 4 regional offices in the state of NC. Each regional office is charged with providing direction, guidance and support to the prisons in its domain. The CRO maintains 14 correctional facilities spanning over several counties of the state.
