This posting is intended to fill a total of (2) Transportation Worker III positions: 60021510 and 60021517.
This posting is for a Transportation Worker III position in the Division 10 Roadside Environmental Unit. This position is mainly in the operational area of managing vegetation through the use of herbicides along rights-of-way, but will also assist in seeding/mulching, erosion control, plant bed and wildflower maintenance. The work involves installing erosion control, mowing, and maintaining plant material along NCDOT rights-of-way. The work also includes operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment, including trucks, tractors, tractor attachments, mulch blowers, and other similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools. Work in these positions will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. The positions are subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Safety toe shoes required.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles:
• No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
• Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
• If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade: NC06: Salary Range: $35,596 - $62,294
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Knowledge of vegetation management including, but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
Experience in at least one piece of the following equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeder, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hyrodseeder, skid steer)
Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques
Experience in operation of pesticide applicator trucks, tractors, and utility vehicles
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
