Description of Work

This Health Care Technician I position will serve on the Therapeutic Response Team (TRT). The primary purpose of this position is to provide interventions that help deescalate residents who are in crisis and who are high risk for the use of physical intervention. The position will perform a wide variety of duties directly and indirectly involving total care, treatment and training of persons who are developmentally disabled in order to promote growth, productivity, and dignity.

Job Responsibilities Include:
• Ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of the residents.
• Provide training and support with personal care, domestic skills, leisure-
social skills, and self- management, ensuring the supervision and safety of
residents, and assistance in program and/or training areas.
• Observe all residents’ behaviors, identify, and de-escalate situations,
recognize changes in behaviors and take action applying knowledge of
resident's diagnosis and appropriate interventions.
• Implement specialized protective devices to prevent self-harm and injury.
• Follow clinical directives and/or programmatic treatment plans.
• Implement appropriate/ approved intervention procedures to encourage
positive behaviors and render assistance to staff as needed.
• Ongoing observation of residents and their activities / interactions;
regularly re-directing to prevent or correct inappropriate behaviors.
• Requesting assistance from staff per protocol.
• Implementing policies and procedures during emergency and crisis
situations.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range: $31,200 - $46,348

A Sign-on bonus of $2,000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent on the 2025-2026 Budget Approval.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Ability to communicate observations and recommendations effectively and accurately in written and verbal form.

  • Ability to follow the treatment plans and/or clinical orders and ability to provide personal care and treatments for patients.

  • Ability to learn behavior management interventions and support counseling relationships.

  • Ability to follow the treatment plans and/or clinical orders and ability to provide personal care and treatments for patients.

  • General knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and of nursing methods and techniques in caring for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis (6-8 times daily) and be able to stoop, bend, walk, run short distances (50 yards) and climb stairs without limitations of a permanent nature to provide adequate supervision of the assigned population in the home.

Work Schedule: Fixed shifts with rotating days off as defined by a 40-hr. work week.

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

To qualify for the Sign-on Bonus, a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those who are eligible and working less than 40 hours a week will receive a prorated rate.

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in the North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system, within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date)

  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency

  • DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
