Description of Work

Position is located in the Lumberton Resident Engineer’s Office. Position will serve as an Assistant Resident Engineer and is responsible for supervising employees engaged in the stakeout and inspection of roads and structures during the course of contract construction. Position requires proficiency in plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and familiarity in the operation of survey instruments necessary to stakeout line and grade for roadways and structures. Other duties include the preparation of monthly estimates, final estimates, and other record keeping required during the life of a contract construction project. Position requires daily communication with contractors and subordinate personnel to ensure compliance with the contract plans, standards and specifications. Preference will be given to applicants who have a four-year degree, EIT, or Professional Engineer. Safety toe shoes are required. Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle.

The selected applicant for this position must possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering and construction methods, materials, and equipment. Proficiency in the use of personal computers and ability to utilize contract administration software is necessary. Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts, interpret plans provisions, and specifications. Train other employees, and plain coordinate and supervisor work. Ability to communicate, establish, and maintain working relationships with co-workers, management, contractors, and general public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work in extreme temperatures, uneven terrain conditions for extended period of time. As well as the possess the ability to promote a safe working environment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.

  • Experience in directing, assisting or training of sub-ordinate employees.

  • Experience administering contracts.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering.

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
