The Project Management Unit (PMU) is a high performing unit that delivers quality and innovative projects to the citizens of North Carolina. We recognize the importance of making sure our employees feel valued, respected, and challenged to grow in their professional career.

We are looking for an experienced and knowledgeable Deputy Project Manager skilled in delivering quality transportation projects from concept to construction. This includes working closely with other Project Managers, Divisions, discipline leads, and other internal and external stakeholders to understand the project needs and challenges, as well as assisting Project Managers in removing obstacles, solving problems, and leading multidisciplinary teams.

As the Deputy Project Manager, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality projects (of low to moderate complexity) on time and on budget and developing strong multidisciplinary relationships.

In this role, you will:

• Proactively manage the scope, schedule, budget, and risk for STIP and Non-STIP projects of low to moderate complexity.
• Assist the Senior Project Manager or Project Manager with day-to-day activities and tasks on complex STIP projects.
• Supporting the Senior Project Manager or Project Manager in overseeing private engineering firms (PEF) on external projects.
• Ensure the overall quality of deliverables meets department expectations.
• Run and develop various team reports that assist with tracking project progress and monitoring project budgets.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC18 $63,927.00-$111,871.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience managing a project team delivering transportation projects and tracking/maintaining project schedules.
  • Knowledge of professional engineering principles and practices of civil engineering as related to Highway Design with an emphasis on project planning, project design, and construction and maintenance methods, as they apply to the Project Delivery Process.
  • Knowledge of Professional Engineering contracts and understanding scoping, estimating, and negotiating.
  • Experience setting priorities, developing work schedules, monitoring goal progress, and tracking details/data/information/activities.
  • Experience expressing moderately complex engineering concepts and related facts in a clear and organized manner to internal and external customers.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
