Engineering Lead
The Role
Lyrebird is hiring an Engineering Lead to own delivery and technical direction across one of our core product teams. The systems are genuinely complex: real-time AI in live clinical environments, where latency, accuracy, and reliability aren't trade-offs you get to make lightly. You'll work directly alongside Product, Design, and Clinical as an equal partner in defining what gets built and ensuring it actually ships, to the bar and cadence that a company at our stage demands.
You'll thrive here if ownership isn't something you're asked for, it's just how you operate. You're the kind of engineer who can write code when that's the highest-leverage move, and step back to unblock a teammate when that is. You understand that every day of delay has a real cost, not a figurative one, and that knowledge shapes how you prioritise, how you communicate, and how you lead. You probably don't have a clean label for what you do. That's fine. We don't either.
About Us
Lyrebird Health is building the medical intelligence layer for modern healthcare. Today, we offer a clinical AI platform purpose-built to elevate the standard of care across all clinical settings. The platform brings together ambient realtime document creation, intelligent document management and clinical workflow automation, native patient data integrations across siloed health systems, and a patient and clinical communications layer.
This system delivers better patient outcomes. By empowering clinicians with higher quality and more three-dimensional patient information at the right time, lightening the clinician’s mental load during consults, automating comms that increase velocity of action around a patient, and keeping the patient in the loop the entire time; the experience of delivering, and receiving care, are being completely transformed.
Every year in Australia, ~3000 people die from preventable medical errors. Not from incurable diseases, but from misdiagnosis, missing information, and clinicians making decisions under impossible circumstances. This transformation can’t come fast enough.
What you'll do
Own end-to-end delivery for your team: from technical scoping and sequencing through to production, with the urgency and quality bar this environment demands
Solve hard technical problems directly, whether that's architecture decisions, hairy production issues, or the kind of complex build that needs a senior engineer in the room, not just directing from outside it
Ship production-grade AI systems that clinicians rely on daily, maintaining the reliability, latency, and trust that a live clinical environment requires
Operate as a genuine peer to Product and Clinical, co-owning priorities and commitments rather than executing against a backlog handed to you
Make decisive trade-offs on scope, sequencing, and approach, then communicate them clearly so momentum doesn't stall
Lead a small team of engineers directly, raising the bar on pace and ownership and addressing performance issues early rather than hoping they resolve themselves
Build the team's technical capability over time, sharing context, raising craft, and creating the conditions for engineers to do their best work
What you'll bring
A track record of shipping complex production software in a high-growth or high-pressure environment, where quality and speed both mattered
Real experience with AI-driven development, either building AI-powered systems or working in organisations where AI-native ways of working are the norm
Comfort leading engineers directly, whether as a formal manager or as a senior IC with reports, and the judgment to know when to lead from the front and when to clear the path
The ability to hold technical depth and delivery leadership at the same time, without defaulting entirely to one or the other
Nice to have
Experience in healthcare, clinical software, or other safety-critical environments
Familiarity with TypeScript and AWS
Prior experience at a fast-moving, AI-led organisation where the culture of urgency was genuine, not performative
Every second a clinician spends on documentation is a second they're not with a patient. The systems you ship will directly affect how much time clinicians have, how good their decisions are, and in some cases, whether a patient gets the care they need. That's the weight of this work, and it's why the people who do it well care about it deeply.
We're building a team that reflects the diversity of the people who benefit from our work. We want Lyrebird to be a place where everyone feels safe, supported, and able to thrive. If you're from an underrepresented background in tech, we strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every requirement.
Lyrebird is an AI medical scribe for secure, comprehensive clinical documentation. Save time, enhance patient care. Perfect for GPs, Specialists, and Allied Health professionals.
