Field Interns

Job Description

The Field Intern will support the implementation of NOURISH Project activities at community level, working closely with farmers, local leaders, extension officers, and other stakeholders in the target areas. The role is field-based and includes supporting community mobilisation, delivery of agriculture and nutrition-related activities, monitoring field progress, and documenting results to contribute to effective implementation of project interventions.

The successful candidate will have one to two years of relevant experience in the agriculture and nutrition sector, with practical exposure to community engagement and field activity support. The intern should be comfortable working with rural communities through mobilisation and training, supporting accurate data collection, entry, analysis, and reporting, and contributing to effective coordination of field activities while actively learning.

Project implementation:

• Support the organisation and day-to-day implementation of agriculture and nutrition activities in assigned communities especially training and follow-up.
• Mobilise farmers, community groups, and local stakeholders to participate in project activities, meetings, demonstrations, and training sessions.
• Support community-level planning, identification, establishment, technical follow-up of demonstration plots, farmer learning activities, and other field-based interventions.
• Promote good agricultural practices, horticulture activities, and nutrition-sensitive approaches at community level.
• Mobilize, coordinate and support access to finance interventions including development Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLA) and linkages to finance.
• Assist in collection of market information and stakeholders leading to identifying market opportunities and facilitating linkages for input and output markets.
• Promote market systems strengthening and linkages between smallholder farmers and critical service providers for inputs, finance, training, information, and markets.
• Work closely with community leaders, extension staff, and project team members to strengthen local participation and coordination.
• Provide logistical and administrative support for field visits, meetings, and community engagement activities.

Monitoring, Learning and Reporting:

• Collect field data using approved tools and support verification of information from project sites and beneficiaries.
• Accurately and timely enter data into project databases, tracking tools, or spreadsheets to track progress, maintain or update project records.
• Support basic data cleaning, analysis, and preparation of summaries for internal reporting and learning.
• Assist in preparing field reports, activity updates, beneficiary records, and other routine documentation.
• Participate in community feedback sessions and document key observations, lessons, and success stories from the field.
• Observe and analyse trends, issues, and relationships for learning purposes and to support programme improvement.
• Continuously identify risks and challenges in value chain activities and propose practical solutions.

Qualifications

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in general agriculture, crop science, horticulture, nutrition, community development, or a related agricultural field from a recognised learning institution.
• One to two years of relevant working experience in the agriculture and/or nutrition sector. Previous experience as an intern or volunteer in relevant sectors equally counts.
• Experience working directly with communities, farmer groups, or rural households, with strong community engagement skills.
• Practical understanding of field activity implementation, farmer mobilisation, and basic extension support.
• Skills in data collection, data entry, basic data analysis, and report preparation.
• Understanding of agriculture, horticulture, and nutrition-sensitive community approaches is an added advantage.
• Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
• Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other basic digital data entry and processing tools, is essential.
• Willingness and ability to work extensively in the field, including in remote rural communities.
• Basic knowledge of climate-smart, regenerative, or sustainable agricultural practices is an added advantage.

Remuneration: Based strictly on SNV Tanzania internship rates.
