Job Description

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is looking to appoint a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery to join our established Trauma and Orthopaedic team. This is a full-time post based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, providing both elective and trauma care as part of a busy and supportive department.

The Orthopaedic service is busy and well supported with dedicated trauma theatres running daily, daily virtual and face to face fracture clinics (in week) and sub-specialty clinics and lists.

You will join a team of experienced consultants with a wide range of sub- specialty interests delivering a comprehensive trauma and orthopaedic service to a large local population. The post includes a mix of:

  • Elective shoulder & elbow surgery
  • Trauma surgery
  • Elective and fracture outpatient clinics
  • Participation in the on-call rota (1 in 16)
  • Supporting departmental service delivery and innovation
  • Supervising and mentoring junior doctors and trainees

There is a strong emphasis on teamwork, and you’ll be expected to contribute fully to the clinical workload as well as wider departmental activities.

You will have dedicated SPA time to support CPD, revalidation, and professional development.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCS T&O
  • Fellowship in shoulder & elbow surgery– trauma and elective
  • Experience in shoulder & elbow surgery

 

Clinical Experience

Essential

Entry on the GMC specialist register via

  • CCT (proposed date must be within 6 months),
  • CESR or European Community Rights
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via
  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR or
  •  European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification

 

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrable skills and experience of Trauma and shoulder & elbow surgery
  • Understanding of clinical risk management

Knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and use of evidence-based practice
  • IT skills
  • Effective, confident presentation ability
  • Experience in and outside speciality

Other

  • Understanding the principles of research
  • Evidence of participation in audit
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Publications
  • Prizes and honours
  • Logical thinking, problem solving and decision making
  • Ability to organise oneself and prioritise clinical need
  • Experience and ability in work in multi –professional teams
  • Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance and resource constraints
  • Evidence of teaching experience, particularly junior medical staff and a willingness to contribute to teaching
