NHS Band 5: Salary £32,073 - £39,043 per annum

Hours per Week:  37.5 full time

Contract:  Permanent

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Health and Safety Advisor to join our Single Corporate Health and Safety Service, supporting both Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Health and Safety professional who wants to develop their career within a large, complex acute NHS environment, working closely with managers and frontline teams to promote a strong, positive safety culture and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

As a Health and Safety Advisor, you will support the delivery of a comprehensive, proactive health and safety service across both Trusts. Key responsibilities include:

  • Promoting a positive health and safety culture across all services and staff groups
  • Undertaking health and safety audits, inspections and workplace assessments
  • Providing advice and guidance on risk assessments, safe systems of work and legislative compliance
  • Supporting managers with accident and incident investigations, and trend analysis to drive learning and improvement
  • Assisting with the delivery of health and safety training to a wide range of staff
  • Supporting the development and review of health and safety policies, guidance and promotional campaigns
  • Maintaining accurate records, reports and databases relating to health and safety activity
  • Providing day-to-day supervision and support to junior health and safety staff where required

This is a varied, hands-on role offering excellent exposure to multiple clinical and non-clinical environments.

Qualifications

Who we’re looking for

You will be a confident communicator with a genuine passion for health and safety and continuous improvement.

Essential:

  • A recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g. NEBOSH Certificate) or significant demonstrable relevant experience
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety legislation relevant to the role
  • Ability to advise, influence and engage staff at all levels
  • Experience of completing risk assessments, inspections, audits or incident investigations
  • Confident in producing written reports and delivering training or presentations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable:

  • Experience working within healthcare or the NHS
  • Training qualification or delivery experience
  • Knowledge or experience of patient moving and handling

Experience

Essential:

  • Ability to communicate information to individuals/groups/committees in a comprehensive way.
  • Ability to plan and organise basic activities or programmes underpinning relevant H&S topics and legislative requirements.
  • Confident in preparing and delivering basic written reports.
  • Confident to deliver training, presentations and/or reports to individuals, groups and or committees.
  • Ability to work autonomously, and as part of a team with integrity and confidentiality, managing own workload and demands
  • Confident to communicate and share best practice in Health and Safety to multi-disciplinary groups and all levels of staff throughout the organisation
  • Ability to handle difficult or complex situations with compassion and sensitivity.

Desirable:

  • Project management
  • Experience of working within a care/ healthcare/NHS environment

Knowledge

Essential:

 

  • Have knowledge of legislation and regulations relevant to scope of role.
  • Competent in the use of a wide range of software eg: Microsoft office, Risk Management system, SharePoint

Desirable:

  • Ability to make sound professional judgement on a broad range of Health and safety issues, with the autonomy to intervene where unsafe practice is identified.
