The public affairs specialist serves as key member of the Public Affairs team, supporting ACOG’s critical advocacy communications about policies that impact the delivery of obstetric and gynecologic care, including reproductive health care and maternal health. The position will support ACOG’s Public Affairs efforts and advance legislative advocacy by leveraging the organization’s District and Section leaders as spokespeople with both state-level and national media coverage.

Note: This position is considered Hybrid and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support the Senior Media Relations Managers through backing up the press line, managing media lists, and Communications inbox, as appropriate.
  • Proactive coordination with state legislative affairs team and with District and Section leadership to create editorial calendar of upcoming state events, legislative challenges and opportunities.
  • Creation of state advocacy communications materials, including, but not limited to, ACOG-branded media statements, op-eds, letters to the editor, member facing communications, social media posts, on behalf of District and Section leadership.
  • Preparation of District and Section leadership for media and speaking engagements, including through creation of talking points and proactive group media trainings and one-on-one preparation prior to specific interviews, in collaboration with
    Senior Media Relations Managers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated proficiency in media-facing materials.
  • Familiarity with the legislative process.
  • Proven responsiveness and skill balancing the needs of a variety of internal clients.
  • Must be able to work effectively and harmoniously with staff at all levels within the organization.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Political Science, or related field.
  • 2 years’ experience in strategic communications in the government/legislative sector, at a nonprofit institution, or in the media.
  • Experience interacting with members of the media.
  • Experience with or passion for ob-gyn health preferred.
Salary Range
$52,000$62,000 USD
