Overview
The Senior Electrical Specialist serves as ON.energy’s qualifying master electrician of record in the State of Texas and the on-site electrical subject matter expert for AI UPS deployments at hyperscale data center campuses. Holding (and “hanging”) an active Texas Master Commercial Electrician license under ON.energy for the duration of employment is a core function of the role and a condition of hire.
This is a high-travel, hands-on field role and an individual contributor position with no direct reports. The Specialist is the primary escalation path for electrical issues during commissioning — validating workmanship and code compliance, witnessing and signing off on key electrical tests, and driving issues to resolution with EPCs, AHJs, utilities, and OEMs on aggressive schedules. The ideal candidate brings deep field electrical experience and the authority to hold the line on safety and code compliance.
Key Responsibilities
License of Record & Electrical Authority
- Serve as ON.energy’s qualifying master electrician of record in the State of Texas, holding (and “hanging”) your active Texas Master Commercial Electrician license under ON.energy for the duration of employment. This is a core function of the role and a condition of hire.
- Act as the on-site electrical subject matter expert and primary escalation path for electrical issues that arise during the commissioning phase of ON.energy AI UPS deployments at hyperscale data center campuses.
- Coach EPC field crews and ON.energy field staff on electrical safety, code compliance, and quality standards. This role carries technical authority and is the team’s electrical escalation point but does not include direct people-management responsibility.
Field Inspection & Verification
- Travel to project sites across the U.S., typically 50% or more of the time, to investigate, document, and drive resolution of electrical issues in the field, working outdoors in active construction environments in all weather.
- Validate that medium- and low-voltage installations, terminations, grounding, bonding, conduit, cable management, and overall electrical workmanship meet NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, AHJ, and ON.energy internal standards prior to energization.
- Witness, verify, and sign off on key electrical commissioning activities including insulation resistance / megger testing, continuity testing, torque verification, phasing, polarity, and pre-energization inspections.
- Ensure all work is compliant with relevant codes (NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, OSHA) and ON.energy’s internal standards.
Coordination & Issue Resolution
- Partner with EPC contractors, electrical subcontractors, utility representatives, AHJs, and OEM field service engineers (inverters, switchgear, transformers, BESS) to push electrical issues to resolution on aggressive commissioning schedules.
- Review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, panel schedules, grounding plans, and protective device coordination submittals from a constructability and code-compliance perspective, and flag issues back to engineering before they reach the field.
Permits & Documentation
- Pull, sponsor, and close out electrical permits as required by AHJs across project jurisdictions, and coordinate inspections.
- Capture electrical findings, deficiencies, root-cause analyses, and corrective actions through punch lists, daily field reports, photo documentation, and as-built redlines — leaving a clear paper trail behind every site visit.
Required Qualifications
- Active Texas Master Electrician license — Commercial (in good standing, no current disciplinary actions).
- Willingness to serve as ON.energy’s qualifying master electrician of record in Texas — i.e., to “hang” your license with ON.energy — for the duration of your employment.
- 10+ years of progressive electrical experience, including significant time working as a licensed journeyman prior to obtaining your master license.
- Hands-on experience installing, terminating, and/or troubleshooting medium-voltage (up to 35 kV) and low-voltage commercial or industrial electrical systems.
- Direct field experience with large-scale electrical equipment such as inverters, switchgear, switchboards, transformers, MCCs, battery energy storage systems, or comparable utility-scale infrastructure.
- Strong working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and OSHA standards as they apply to commercial and utility-scale installations.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, panel schedules, grounding plans, and protective device coordination documentation.
- Comfort working outdoors in all weather conditions on active construction sites — including walking uneven terrain, climbing ladders, working at elevation or in confined spaces where required, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Comfortable wearing all required PPE, including arc flash gear, for extended periods.
- Strong written documentation skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and common field/construction documentation tools (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam, or similar).
- Ability to travel to project sites across the U.S. at least 50% of the time, including occasional extended deployments during commissioning peaks.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and willingness to drive to/from sites and rental vehicles between airports and remote project locations.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional coordination skills, with the ability to hold the line on safety and code compliance with contractors, OEMs, and customers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience commissioning BESS, AI UPS, solar, wind, or other utility-scale energy infrastructure projects.
- Experience working on EPC or design-build projects in critical infrastructure, data center, or hyperscale environments.
- Familiarity with commissioning protocols and QA/QC procedures for electrical systems, including FAT/SAT, IST, and energization sequencing.
- Reciprocal master electrician licenses in additional U.S. states, or willingness to pursue reciprocity where ON.energy operates.
- Familiarity with power system study tools such as ETAP or SKM (no need to be a power-systems engineer — but comfort reading their outputs is useful).
- OSHA 30, NFPA 70E qualified person training, CPR/First Aid, and similar field safety certifications.
- Prior experience as the qualifying master electrician of record for an electrical contractor, EPC, or developer.
Soft Skills
- Authoritative yet collaborative — able to hold the line on safety and code compliance with contractors, OEMs, and customers.
- Strong problem-solver and cross-functional coordinator.
- Meticulous documentarian who leaves a clear paper trail behind every site visit.
- Comfortable operating autonomously as the on-site electrical authority.
- Calm and effective under aggressive commissioning schedules.
