Overview
ON.energy is seeking a Commissioning Engineer (Field Engineer / Systems Integrator) to execute system-level commissioning, lead small on-site teams, and drive project milestones across ON.energy’s mission-critical, medium-voltage double-conversion UPS deployments built on utility-scale and C&I BESS equipment (batteries, transformers, PCS, and controls). Reporting to a Senior Commissioning Engineer, you will be trusted to operate autonomously on-site — managing testing, troubleshooting, and documentation while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
This is a high-travel, hands-on field role. You will spend the majority of your time on project sites across the U.S. and occasionally internationally. The ideal candidate is technically sharp, highly organized, and comfortable leading a small team in fast-paced construction environments.
Key Responsibilities
Commissioning & Testing
- Execute system-level commissioning tests including functionality checks, network verification, and performance validation for data center, utility-scale, and C&I BESS projects.
- Support FAT validation and site acceptance testing (SAT) in coordination with OEM and owner engineers.
- Perform functional testing of inverters, PCS, BMS, EMS/SCADA, protection relays, and associated BOS equipment.
- Identify, document, and resolve commissioning deficiencies; manage punch lists through to closeout.
Team & Project Leadership
- Manage a subset of the on-site commissioning team (2–10 people), autonomously driving project initiatives as directed by the Senior Commissioning Engineer and management team.
- Coordinate daily with EPC contractors, OEM field service engineers, and the ON.energy project and engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and keep milestones on track.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams to resolve technical challenges as they arise in the field.
Controls & Systems Integration
- Review and validate configurations for PLC, SCADA, EMS, network infrastructure, and related control systems.
- Conduct troubleshooting for control system issues, network faults, and inverter problems.
- Verify system configuration against design drawings, specifications, and interconnection requirements.
- Support integration and testing of SCADA/DMS communications (DNP3, Modbus, etc.)
Safety & Quality
- Foster and maintain a culture of safety for all team members on site, owning the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) programs.
- Support safety inspections and risk assessments throughout the commissioning lifecycle.
- Ensure commissioning activities comply with NFPA 70E, NEC, IEEE, and applicable NERC/FERC standards.
- Provide field reports and maintain thorough, audit-ready documentation for all commissioning activities.
Required Qualifications
- 3–6 years of hands-on commissioning experience on BESS, solar + storage, or utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Direct experience with battery storage systems including BMS, PCS/inverter, and EMS/SCADA commissioning.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, and P&IDs.
- Working knowledge of protection relay testing, CT/PT verification, and DC/AC high-voltage systems.
- Strong technical writing skills; ability to produce clear field reports and commissioning documents.
- Valid driver’s license and US passport
- Ability to travel >80% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with one or more major BESS OEMs (Tesla Megapack, BYD, CATL, Sungrow, or similar).
- Familiarity with SCADA communication protocols: DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, etc
- Familiarity with utility interconnection processes (distribution and transmission).
- NETA, NICET, or relevant electrical certifications.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification; NFPA 70E training.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Power Systems, or a related technical field (or equivalent field experience).
Soft Skills
- Technically sharp, highly organized, and comfortable leading a small team in fast-paced construction environments.
- Strong communicator across EPC, OEM, and internal stakeholders.
- Autonomous and accountable.
- Safety- and quality-first mindset.
