Job Description

This role is for internal applicants for Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust and Isle of Wight Trust only.

NHS Band 6 Salary: £39,959 - £48,117 per annum

Hours per Week:  full time 37.5

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: Queen Alexandra Hospital, Southwick Hill Road, Cosham, Portsmouth, PO6 3LY. Across site travel will be required, the frequency will be agreed locally.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to join our successful Research and Innovation Department, working as a Specialist Research Nurse or Midwife within the Women’s Health Research Team. Our team deliver a variety of studies, covering a range of specialties & associated conditions. The post holder will be responsible for supporting the day to day running of high quality Commercial and National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) portfolio studies and will be expected to contribute to all aspects of trial delivery across the Trust.

Working with the other Specialist Research Nurses & Midwife in Women’s health, you will be responsible for delivering the diverse portfolio, providing high quality care from recruitment through to follow up, closeout and archive. The post holder will work in close collaboration with the Research team, Principal Investigators, and support staff, to ensure compliance with Trust Policy, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Tissue Act (HTA), and trial specific protocols.

Main Duties

We are looking for a registered nurse or Midwife with, excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, whilst possessing a keen eye for detail. Previous experience in delivering research trials and/or women’s Health knowledge would be advantageous but robust training will be provided to those who have no experience in this area. Leadership skills are essential to support both team and portfolio development, and there may be a requirement to undertake line management within this role so previous experience of managing or supervising junior staff is essential as is an ability to work independently and flexibly. The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic and ready to work actively to support recruiting patients in line with NIHR targets. There may be times when you will be asked to support other areas to achieve these targets including off site such as community hospitals and the Portsmouth Research Hub.

The post holder will be supported by the Women and Children Research team, senior research nurses and our clinicians and Principal Investigators. This role is ideal for a highly motivated nurse or midwife who is keen to further develop their experience in clinical research to help shape the future of health care. In return, you will be provided with opportunities to further develop your knowledge and skills in delivering research. The post holder will work in close collaboration with the Research department, Principal Investigators and research support staff, to ensure compliance with Trust Policy, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Tissue Act (HTA), and trial specific protocols.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Current RN Adult or RM. RGN/RGM registration with NMC
  • Degree in relevant field
  • Evidence of recent CPD
  • 2 years clinical post registration experience
  • Effective leadership, motivation and team building skills.
  • Articulate and knowledgeable in current health care and Clinical Trials issues.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Skill in organising resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals
  • Ability to develop and maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
  • Ability to make clinical decisions and judgments.
  • Critical appraisal skills.
  • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and current Trials’ Regulations (EU Directive Clinical Trials)
  • Health Promotion

Desirable

  • Relevant experience in Management /Leadership Course training.
  • Post graduate level qualification in Research, Healthcare related subject or equivalent.
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Training for Research.
  • Previous experience of project management and/or participating in the co-ordination of Clinical Trials.
  • Previous experience of leadership and management.
  • Evidence of systems development and change management.
  • Phlebotomy
