We are seeking to make an appointment at Lecturer and/or Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery (Education-Focused), with the primary focus to support the teaching of small animal surgery within the DVM program. You will play an integral part in the oversight of the Small Animal Surgery curriculum. You will have an active teaching role of DVM veterinary students in liaison with the Heads of Specialist and Primary Care Services.

An academic background is not essential for this role – candidates with strong clinical experience will be considered.

A Lecturer is expected to engage in teaching and research independently or as part of a team and support the DVM program predominantly through clinical supervision of surgery practical and didactic classes. A lecturer would have advanced training in a specific discipline (eg membership or similar).

The Base Salary for a Lecturer at Level B is between $132,533 – $157,381 p.a) + 15% Loading for a Registered Specialist + 17% Superannuation (a total package up to $211,756 p.a)

A Senior Lecturer is expected to engage in teaching and research independently or as part of a team and support the DVM program predominantly through clinical supervision of surgery practical and didactic classes. A Senior lecturer would have advanced training in a specific discipline (eg membership or similar).

The Base Salary for a Senior Lecturer at Level B is between $162,347 – $187,198 p.a) + 15% Loading for a Registered Specialist + 17% Superannuation (a total package up to $251,874 p.a)

The academic environment is different to commercial specialty practice with the academic mission of teaching and research being central to operations. You are not focused on caseload benchmarks of revenue targets but rather making a difference, leaving a legacy on the profession and undertaking research that changes the lives of animals.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • maintain and contribute to the long-standing reputation of the School for academic excellence

  • collaborate with other staff to coordinate and develop curricula and programs within the School ensuring outstanding teaching and learning outcomes

  • coordinate and engage in a high-quality teaching and learning experience which meets the University’s expectations and standards for education

  • make original and innovative contributions to the advancement of research and education within the discipline which are recognised as outstanding, nationally or internationally

  • maintain a research profile which meets University expectations and standards and enhances the reputation of the School, including success in competitive research grants and other research income generation, as well as publications in peer-reviewed international journals

  • collaborate cooperatively and constructively with colleagues in teaching and research teams

Since the founding of veterinary science in 1910, the mission of the Sydney School of Veterinary Science (SSVS) has been to provide the nation’s best training in the health, welfare, and conservation of animals. The School is internationally accredited with the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK) by reciprocal agreement. Veterinary science at Sydney is ranked 1st in Australia according to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2025.

About you

Lecturer in Veterinary Small Animal (Education-Focused)

  • registration or eligible for registration with the NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board

  • advanced training in Small Animal Surgery (ANZCVS Membership in Small Animal Surgery or similar)

  • an ability to work cooperatively and constructively with colleagues and veterinarians in all referral services of the UVTHS in a collegiate manner

  • experience in teaching is desirable.

Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Small Animal (Education-Focused)

  • a PhD (or near completion) or specialist qualification

  • a Veterinary Science degree registered to practice in New South Wales

  • high level of Veterinary surgical skills and capacity to communicate and instruct practical surgery as well as perform didactic teaching activities

  • have a track record of publication in the field of veterinary surgery

  • an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector

  • an understanding of and ability to lead and support an academic endeavour from curriculum design to producing leading research and providing a student enabling environment

  • sustained record of excellence in teaching and learning design and practice, as evidenced through successful student outcomes, demonstrated impact on student learning, recognition through awards/prizes and innovation.
