Core Functions is a boutique web services company operating within Upstatement, a strategic design studio. We focus on website maintenance, enhancements, and ongoing brand support for mission-driven organizations, nonprofits, for profit, and advocacy groups. Our small, senior team works closely with clients to keep their digital products running well and evolving over time. We care as much about clear communication and good judgment as we do about clean code.

The Role

We're looking for a well-rounded engineer to play a central role in creating and maintaining remarkable digital products. This is a fully remote, part-time contract role.

Engineers in this role are responsible for ensuring their code meets client expectations and will actively participate in the entire support development lifecycle. Day-to-day work includes enhancements, bug fixes, and updates across a range of digital product solutions, and mitigating risk along the way. Engineers manage development releases to client solutions with no regular oversight.

Our engineers rarely specialize exclusively in one tech stack, preferring to keep an open mind and a diverse skill set in order to deliver optimal solutions for the problem at hand. Their responsibilities don't end with code. We believe communication, collaboration, and good judgment are as important to our work as raw programming skills.

What You’ll Do

• Maintenance. Understand the roles of the digital product and related infrastructure (production/staging environments, CI/CD tooling, etc.) Monitor the solution and recommend changes to environments as needed.
• Code. High-quality, clean, and readable front-end/back-end code, developed in concert with design and delivered on time.
• Quality. Engineers are accountable for the overall quality of our production deliverables - code, infrastructure, and documentation.
• Communication. Clear and concise written and oral communication, both internally and with our clients and tech partners.
• Collaboration. We're not just the last stop in a production pipeline; our engineers contribute critical thinking at every phase of the project life cycle.
• Research & Solution Architecture. You'll assist project leads in the research and selection of technical solutions to fulfill business requirements.

About You

• Professional experience in a similar role
• Fluency with JavaScript
• Fluency with PHP
• Familiarity with popular frameworks and CMSs (Ideally Craft, WordPress or Drupal)
• Familiarity with modern front-end development tools and best practices, including css preprocessors and build tooling (Webpack, Vite, esbuild, etc.)
• Intimate knowledge of web performance and security
• Working knowledge of common testing tools and methodologies
• Familiarity with accessibility standards, best practices, and testing methodologies
• Working familiarity with Scrum/Agile methodologies
• Explain decisions, win over stakeholders, and fulfill the creative strategy
• Navigate complex business, user, and team needs with empathy
• Capable of working on multiple projects concurrently

Contract Details & Compensation

This fully remote contract opportunity expected to run approximately 3-6 months, with the possibility of extension based on business need and project scope. The expected commitment is approximately 20 hours per week, with availability needed during core works of 9AM-5PM Eastern Time.

Compensation is $50-$75/hour, depending on experience and alignment with the scope of work.
