About Traysar

Traysar was founded in 2025 by second-time tech founders, recipients of the Israel Defense Prize, and engineers from elite military units, The Boring Company, and SpaceX. Backed by Lux Capital and the founders of Anduril, the leading autonomous defense company, Traysar is reclaiming Western deterrence by developing and deploying technologies for the fifth domain of warfare: the underground.

Job Summary

Traysar is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Navigation & Sensing Engineer to build the company's underground navigation and perception capability from the ground up.

The systems you design will enable underground machines to navigate mile-scale distances without GPS or operators standing above the machine, while building an understanding of the underground environment ahead of excavation. This role spans sensing hardware, signal processing, localization, sensor fusion, software, and field testing.

You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, software, and robotics engineers to develop and integrate next-generation underground navigation systems into Traysar's underground systems. The role reports directly to the COO and Head of R&D.

This position is based in Austin, Texas or Herzliya, Israel and requires approximately 40% travel, including extended periods between locations for field testing and outdoor operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the end-to-end development of Traysar's underground navigation and sensing systems.

  • Research and evaluate technologies for underground localization, mapping, and perception.

  • Select, procure, integrate, and validate sensors for underground navigation.

  • Develop signal processing, localization, sensor fusion, and mapping algorithms.

  • Build software for underground navigation and perception.

  • Design, prototype, and integrate sensing hardware into Traysar's underground systems.

  • Optimize both sensing hardware and software for accuracy, robustness, and real-world performance.

  • Conduct laboratory and outdoor field testing, analyze data, and continuously improve system performance.

  • Work closely with the hardware team to ensure seamless integration between sensing, electronics, mechanical systems, and autonomy.

  • Help define the long-term technical roadmap for Traysar's underground navigation capability.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of professional engineering experience.

  • Degree in engineering or equivalent practical experience.

  • Hands-on experience developing and integrating sensing hardware and software into real-world systems.

  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

  • Willingness to travel approximately 40% for field testing in the United States and Israel.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 3 years of experience in two or more of the following:

    • Signal processing

    • Sensor fusion

    • GPS-denied navigation

    • Inertial navigation systems (INS/IMU)

    • Electromagnetic localization

    • Magnetometers and magnetic sensing

    • Low-frequency communications

    • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

    • Seismic sensing

    • Acoustic sensing

    • Underground localization

    • Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)

    • Kalman filtering or Bayesian estimation

    • Directional drilling or underground guidance systems

  • Strong programming skills in C++, Python, MATLAB, Rust, Embedded C/C++, or similar languages.

  • Experience selecting, integrating, and optimizing sensors for harsh operating environments.

  • Experience designing or modifying sensing hardware and electronics.

  • Comfortable developing algorithms from first principles and validating them through real-world experimentation.

  • Experience working with autonomous systems, robotics, geophysics, underground construction, mining, defense, or oil and gas is a plus.

  • Able to own the complete navigation and sensing stack from concept through field testing while working across mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines.

If there is a fit, we'll schedule two technical interviews. For the second interview, you'll prepare a short presentation about a system or technology you've built that you're proud of, with a focus on the engineering challenges and technical decisions behind it. Candidates who pass the technical interviews will proceed to a final on-site interview.
