The Role
We are looking for a Veterinary Research Mentor to support high-achieving pre-vet students through the development and completion of original literature-based research projects in veterinary medicine, animal science, and related disciplines. If you hold a DVM, PhD, or both and are passionate about mentorship, this role is an excellent fit. This is a part-time, remote, 1099 contract role that can be based anywhere in the United States or Canada.
Responsibilities
- Mentor undergraduate students through the full research process, from topic selection and literature review to manuscript development and final deliverables
- Guide students in developing feasible, high-quality research questions aligned with their academic and career goals
- Provide structured feedback on research plans, literature synthesis, and written research drafts
- Help students understand research standards and discipline-specific expectations
- Support students pursuing outcomes such as academic papers, posters, or journal submissions, depending on program scope
- Track progress against defined milestones and timelines to ensure consistent forward momentum
Qualifications
- DVM, PhD, or both in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Science, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience conducting academic or veterinary research
- Strong background in literature review, research methodology, and scientific writing
- Experience mentoring students or trainees
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong planning, organization, and project management skills
- A passion for mentorship and student development
