Job Description
As Specialist Metallurgical Engineer your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Comply with all legal, health and safety practices, standards, and codes.
- Provide specialist technical support to the operation and projects as required within the functional area, such as Crushing and Screening, DMS, JIG QA/QC, Automation, and integration.
- Develop and implement a metallurgical blueprint for their area of functioning, acting as a subject matter expert.
- Offer technical input for troubleshooting and resolving complex metallurgical problems for specific processes/systems.
- Share knowledge and transfer best practices.
- Report process performance in the area, providing SME input into production plans.
- Liaise upstream to provide the best support and input to process performance, capturing and reporting non-conformances in the laboratory non-conformance system.
- Monitor deviations on Starlims during the shift's sample preparation process and attend to any deviations.
- Monitor equipment behaviour for functionality and address malfunctions to prevent delays in the flow of ore samples to the key receivers.
- Act as the supervisor's eyes and ears in the working area to reach set objectives and production targets.
- Align actions with reasonable housekeeping procedures and carry them out according to safety regulations.
- Carry out instructions from the supervisor per standard operating procedures and provide feedback upon completion.
- Demonstrate an expert level of understanding of installed equipment and processes.
- Generate and implement ideas to improve and develop processes and equipment to ensure cost and process efficiency.
- Collaborate with multi-functional teams to share expert knowledge where needed, supporting improving and optimising processes.
- Investigate identified opportunities to determine their potential for improving or optimising plant processes.
- Implement and monitor approved initiatives to confirm desired outcomes.
- Investigate and resolve all external client queries within a reasonable timeframe.
- Contribute to developing and testing new growth ideas for viability, providing metallurgical input to project teams to maintain metallurgical integrity.
- Ensure that all necessary preparation activities are completed before commencing a project, such as conducting an in-depth investigation to determine the project scope and making recommendations to achieve project success.
- Monitor and manage project contractors to ensure they conform to the Mine's requirements, safety regulations and standards when performing their work.
- Execute projects based on well-established project management principles, such as cost management.
- Identify and recommend growth opportunities to support personal growth and subordinates, managing subordinates to maximise output. Apply ER/HR policies in personnel management.
- Manage legal appointment duties where appropriate (area, contractor management).
This role is in Processing (PRO) department on a Band 6 (D4/D5) level reporting to the Section Manager Plant Technical.
Qualifications
- Grade 12/N3 Technical (NQF3)
- B.Eng. or BTech in Metallurgical/Chemical Engineering
- SA Drivers Licence
Technical Knowledge
- 6-8 years, including post-graduate training plant experience.
- Operational experience during the completion of a Professional Training Program.
- Operational experience as an Engineer in process optimisation and development.
- Direct production supervision experience is beneficial.
