POSITION DESCRIPTION

The City of Fresno is hiring for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic I - a great entry-level opportunity to work on a
wide range of City vehicles and equipment, including trucks, refuse trucks, trolleys, and other heavy duty
vehicles and equipment. You’ll handle everything from road calls to inspections of engines, transmissions,
and electrical systems—all while gaining hands-on experience and learning from seasoned professionals.
After one year of satisfactory performance at the Heavy Equipment Mechanic I level along with the
necessary training and experience, incumbents are eligible to promote to Heavy Equipment Mechanic II—
the journey-level role in the series—with a salary range of $6,287–$7,643.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain and repair various heavy City vehicles and equipment
- Perform minor repairs and replace components as needed
- Assist with engine tune-ups and system adjustments
- Inspect and test engines, transmissions, and electrical systems

- Respond to road calls for on-site equipment repairs
- Learn to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues
- Use diagnostic tools and software for vehicle assessments
- Maintain clean work areas and accurate service records
- Perform related duties as required
Duties and schedules may vary by assignment, please inquire about specific duties and/or schedules if
called upon for an interview. Incumbents may be required to work any shift; nights, weekends, and holidays
as needed.
Current vacancies exist in the Fleet Maintenance Division of the General Services Department. Immediate
and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the
eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination
process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to
qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion
AND
One (1) year of full-time paid experience performing routine maintenance and simple repairs on diesel,
gasoline, or alternative fuel powered cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and other vehicles and
equipment.
A certification of completion or Associate’s Degree from a recognized vocational, technical, or accredited
college or university program in automotive or heavy equipment technology may be substituted for
required experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License is required at the time of application and continued
maintenance throughout the entire term of employment in this classification.
Within thirty (30) days of appointment must obtain a valid Commercial Instructional Permit.
Within twelve (12) months must obtain and maintain throughout the entire term of employment in this
classification a valid Commercial Class B California Driver’s License with required endorsements and
without air brake restriction.
Within twelve (12) months of appointment, must possess and maintain throughout the entire term of
employment in this classification the following two (2) valid certifications issued by the National Institute
for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in the Medium Heavy Truck (T) Series:
• Brakes (T4)
• Steering & Suspension (T5)
Incumbents must take the two (2) above certification examinations within the first six (6) months of
appointment. Failure to obtain the ASE certifications within twelve (12) months of appointment will be
cause for termination from this class.
This class is in a flexibly-staffed series, which requires twelve (12) months of satisfactory service within
the series. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic I may be “flexed” as early as six (6) months upon
recommendation of the appointing authority and upon possession of all necessary licenses and
certifications. A Heavy Equipment Mechanic I who “flexes” early must still serve the remainder of their probationary period at the II level, for a total twelve (12) months. If an employee is hired at the II level, they
will be required to serve the twelve (12) month probationary period at that level.
These positions have been designated as 'safety sensitive' and require all selected eligible candidates
offered employment to successfully pass a drug test and/or medical examination prior to employment.
Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles,
revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001
pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition
of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout the entire
term of employment in this class.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
The examination process may consist of the following:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: A job-related written examination may be conducted online and may
assess candidates in areas including, but not limited to, safety, math, interpersonal skills, vehicle &
equipment repair methods & tools, English usage, reading comprehension, and/or other job-related topics.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The written examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 20, 2026.
