About Taxwire
Taxwire is building the last global indirect-tax platform finance teams will ever need. We help companies understand their tax exposure, calculate and collect the right amount, automate registrations and filings, and stay compliant as they grow across jurisdictions.
Indirect tax is high-stakes, fragmented, and unforgiving. Rules change constantly, vary by product and location, and create real financial risk when companies get them wrong.
We hire people with high ownership, strong judgment, and low ego. Everyone at Taxwire is expected to understand the customer, solve messy problems end to end, and build systems that scale. We move quickly because our customers depend on us to get it right.
We’ve raised approximately $25 million, serve hundreds of SMB and mid-market companies, and continue to win customers away from legacy providers. We’re proud to have had zero churn to date.
If you want to solve a massive, permanent problem alongside experienced tax experts and product builders, Taxwire is the place to do it.
About the role
This is a technical role, but you do not need to be a software engineer.
Indirect-tax law is fragmented across thousands of jurisdictions, buried in statutes, regulations, rulings, forms, directives, and guidance that change constantly. Turning that information into a product customers can trust requires more than reading the law. It requires structure, judgment, and an obsession with getting the details right.
We’re hiring an Indirect Tax Research Engineer to expand the intelligence layer that powers Taxwire. You’ll research complex US sales and use tax and global VAT questions, determine how the law applies to real products and transactions, and translate your conclusions into structured rules our product and tax engine can use.
This is not a traditional tax research role where the final output is a memo. Your work needs to become logic, data, test cases, and clear product behavior. You’ll work closely with Tax, Product, and Engineering to make sure the nuance survives that translation.
You’ll also use AI aggressively. You’ll build research workflows that can monitor legal changes, find relevant authority, extract structured information, compare jurisdictions, and identify gaps. AI will help you move faster, but you’ll remain accountable for every conclusion that reaches our product or customers.
What you’ll do
Research indirect-tax law
Research sales and use tax laws across US jurisdictions and VAT laws across global markets.
Analyze taxability, sourcing, place of supply, nexus, registration thresholds, exemptions, rates, filing requirements, and other indirect-tax questions.
Interpret statutes, regulations, administrative guidance, rulings, forms, EU directives, and other primary authority.
Monitor US and international legislative and regulatory changes that could affect Taxwire’s customers or product.
Turn research into product logic
Translate sales tax and VAT law into structured rules, decision trees, product categories, and testable requirements.
Document each conclusion with clear reasoning, source authority, effective dates, and known limitations.
Work with Product and Engineering to turn complex tax rules into reliable product behavior.
Build test cases covering common scenarios, edge cases, exceptions, and conflicting authority.
Build AI-native research workflows
Use AI agents and research tools to find authority, compare jurisdictions, extract changes, and draft structured analysis.
Design workflows that make research faster without sacrificing accuracy or traceability.
Evaluate AI-generated conclusions, identify unsupported claims, and improve the systems that produced them.
Help automate recurring research, change monitoring, classification, and quality-assurance work.
Own accuracy and quality
Review sales tax and VAT content, classifications, and product logic before they reach customers.
Investigate conflicting sources and make clear, defensible judgment calls.
Respond to difficult sales tax and VAT questions surfaced by customers, Tax Operations, Product, or Engineering.
Maintain an audit trail so we can explain what our system concluded and why.
Build the research function
Help define Taxwire’s tax ontology, research standards, source hierarchy, and review process.
Create reusable templates, playbooks, quality controls, and documentation.
Identify gaps in our US and global tax coverage and prioritize research based on customer and product impact.
Turn one-off questions into durable knowledge that makes the entire system smarter.
What you need
You’re a tax expert who thinks in systems. You understand how tax conclusions should be represented, tested, maintained, and applied at scale.
You’re deeply technical. You’re comfortable working with structured data, decision trees, schemas, APIs, and product logic, and can communicate clearly with tax professionals and engineers.
You’re AI-native and rigorous. You use new tools aggressively while verifying every conclusion against the underlying authority.
You’re a finisher. You can take an ambiguous tax question from primary-source research through a clear conclusion and into production-ready logic.
You have exceptional attention to detail. Effective dates, jurisdictional differences, exceptions, definitions, and source quality matter because they directly affect our customers.
5+ years of indirect-tax experience, with deep knowledge of US sales and use tax and VAT.
Significant experience researching and interpreting US and international primary tax authority.
The ability to translate complex sales tax and VAT conclusions into clear, structured, and testable requirements.
Comfort working with structured data, spreadsheets, tax research platforms, and technical systems.
Strong written communication and documentation skills.
Hands-on interest in using AI tools to improve tax research and content development.
Nice to have
Experience at a tax technology company, tax content provider, Big Four firm, SALT practice, or indirect-tax advisory firm.
Experience researching VAT for digital services, SaaS, e-commerce, or cross-border transactions.
Familiarity with EU VAT directives and country-specific VAT guidance.
Experience working with tax engines, product taxability classifications, rates, sourcing rules, place-of-supply rules, or tax content.
Familiarity with SQL, Python, APIs, data models, or rule-based systems.
Experience building or reviewing AI-assisted tax research workflows.
CPA, CMI, JD, LLM, MST, or another relevant tax credential. Helpful, but not required.
Why work at Taxwire
You want to help build the source of truth behind a global indirect-tax platform.
You want your research to become a product, not disappear into a memo.
You want to push how AI changes the way high-quality tax research gets done.
You’ll work with tax experts, engineers, and product builders who care deeply about getting it right.
We have high standards, move quickly, and genuinely give a fuck about each other.
Competitive salary, meaningful equity, company-covered benefits, and PTO.
Why you shouldn’t work at Taxwire
You only want advisory work, client memos, or high-level tax strategy.
You don’t enjoy translating legal nuance into structured rules and data.
You want AI to produce the answer for you, or you refuse to use it at all.
You need a mature research system and established playbook before you can execute.
Digging through messy authority, conflicting guidance, and edge cases sounds miserable to you.
