Job Description
This position will supervise Technicians/Technologists within the Mineralogy department. This role will coordinate resources around metallurgical activities, to ensure client and project manager expectations are met with respect to schedule and quality.
- Supervise staff to carry out laboratory testing and analysis according to established methods and ensuring Quality Control (QC) standards are met.
- Work closely with Technologists and Project Managers to develop new laboratory methods in response to client/market needs.
- Schedule workflow through the department so that client deadlines are met in a timely fashion. Monitor throughput and performance to ensure project budgets are controlled.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory QC standards. Responsible for the quality of data released by Technicians/Technologists.
- Solve day to day production and process problems within the department.
- Date entry and analysis of technical testing
- Work in partnership with other Supervisors, Project Managers, and Technologists to solve client problems to ensure customer satisfaction standards are met.
- Train & motivate staff, set goals, review performance, and assess training needs, at least annually.
- Plan and initiate procedures and systems to ensure continuous improvement of equipment and processes.
- Work closely with other Supervisors, Group Leaders, and /or Group Managers to design, coordinate, and execute training programs that are consistent with management objectives and personnel development.
- Develop and maintains good relationships with clients including identifying and addressing in a timely fashion their needs.
- Ensure the health and safety of all individuals under their supervision, including the provision of equipment and knowledge to ensure safe work processes.
- Responsible for area housekeeping and for ensuring all safety equipment is in place, on a daily basis.
- Accountable for the maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment in their area of supervision.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary education (three-year diploma) in a Science related program (Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering Technology, Environmental science) is required.
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in a laboratory setting is required.
- A minimum of 1 year of previous supervisory experience, ideally in a minerals/metallurgy related field.
- Strong leadership skills, and experience in the supervision of technical teams.
- Good knowledge and demonstrated application of best practices in laboratory and personnel management.
- Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Incumbents must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects in a fast-paced, highly professional environment.
- Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well with others & independently.
- Proven time management skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work well under pressure during high (peak) workloads and to balance conflicting demands of high volume versus quality of results.
- Extended hours and shift work may be required from time to time.
- Travel to other SGS locations or client locations may be required from time to time. Must have a valid passport for possible out of country travel.
Additional Information
Compensation: $70,000 to $80,000 per year / 40 hours per week.
