Job Description

The Data Steward is responsible for ensuring the quality, integrity, governance, and usability of data across the organisation. This role acts as the bridge between business users and technical teams, establishing standards, improving data documentation, and ensuring data is managed consistently throughout its lifecycle. The Data Steward plays a critical role in enabling trusted data for reporting, analytics, and decision-making.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Governance & Standards

· Define, implement, and enforce data governance frameworks and best practices

· Establish data standards, naming conventions, and modelling principles

· Ensure consistent use of data definitions across reports and systems

· Support the creation and maintenance of data policies and procedures

 

2. Data Quality Management

· Monitor and improve data quality (accuracy, completeness, consistency, timeliness)

· Identify data issues and root causes, working with technical teams to resolve them

· Define and track data quality metrics and KPIs

· Implement controls to prevent recurring data issues

 

3. Metadata & Documentation

· Own and maintain data dictionaries, glossaries, and lineage documentation

· Document data models, transformations, and business rules

· Improve visibility of data flows across systems (e.g., source → warehouse → report)

· Ensure documentation is accessible, up to date, and standardised

 

4. Data Ownership & Stewardship

· Work with business stakeholders to define data ownership and accountability

· Act as the point of contact for data-related queries within assigned domains

· Ensure clear ownership of dashboards, datasets, and automated solutions

 

5. Process & Lifecycle Management

· Support standardised development and release processes (e.g., Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate)

· Ensure proper version control, archiving, and lifecycle management of reports and solutions

· Help manage workspace hygiene and governance (e.g., avoiding duplicate/legacy reports)

 

6. Collaboration & Communication

· Act as a liaison between business users, analysts, and engineering teams

· Translate business requirements into clear data definitions and structures

· Promote data literacy and best practices across the organisation

 

7. Compliance & Risk Management

· Ensure compliance with data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR)

· Support data audits and governance reviews

· Identify and mitigate risks related to poor data management

 

 

Qualifications

Key Skills & Experience

Essential

· Strong understanding of data governance principles and data lifecycle management

· Experience with data warehousing and reporting environments

· Familiarity with tools such as Power BI, Power Platform, SQL, and data modelling concepts

· Ability to create clear documentation and data dictionaries

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

· Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills

 

Desirable

· Experience with data lineage tools or cataloguing platforms

· Knowledge of Master Data Management (MDM) concepts

· Exposure to Direct Query / Import modelling trade-offs

· Understanding of performance optimisation in reporting tools

· Experience working in regulated or large enterprise environments
