Smart City Application Architect

Job Description

Summary Introduction:

We are looking for a Smart City Application Architect to lead the design and development of digital applications that enable smart city services. The ideal candidate will have experience architecting enterprise and citizen-facing applications across multiple platforms and urban service domains. This role requires technical depth, strong integration capabilities, and an understanding of how to translate business needs into flexible, scalable digital applications aligned with the city's strategic goals.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

• Design application architecture for smart city services including mobility, utilities, public safety, environment, and citizen engagement.

• Define architectural patterns and development standards for scalable, interoperable, and secure smart city applications.

• Collaborate with solution architects, developers, UX designers, and data teams to deliver integrated, citizen-centric digital solutions.

• Ensure seamless integration with smart city platforms, IoT systems, and third-party APIs.

• Lead application modernization, microservices adoption, and containerization for legacy urban applications where required.

• Contribute to the development of service blueprints and digital experience flows.

• Support development teams by reviewing designs, conducting technical assessments, and troubleshooting integration challenges.

• Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations, cybersecurity requirements, and accessibility standards.

• Document and maintain architectural deliverables such as solution diagrams, API specifications, and system interfaces.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

• Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in software engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

• 8+ years in software development and application architecture.

• At least 3 years of experience designing or delivering smart city or large-scale public sector applications.

• Proven experience in building modular, API-driven, and cloud-native application architectures.

• Proficiency in microservices, RESTful APIs, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and DevOps practices.

• Knowledge of common smart city and open standards (e.g., OASC, NGSI, FIWARE, ISO 37120).

• Experience with mobile and web technologies, platform integration, and UX design alignment.

• Ability to work with cross-functional technical and business teams.

• Strong documentation and communication skills.

• Bilingual (Arabic and English) is highly desirable.

• Certification in application architecture (e.g., TOGAF, Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud architecture certifications).

• Experience in smart mobility, digital twins, or e-government service platforms.

• Understanding of user journey mapping and human-centered design principles.
