Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to join our Radiation Oncology team in a dedicated anesthesia role. This position is central to delivering safe, high-quality radiation therapy to veterinary cancer patients — every patient, every fraction, every day. The RVT Radiation Oncology Anesthetist works exclusively within the radiation oncology service alongside board-certified radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and a specialized care team to ensure each patient is safely and consistently anesthetized for CT simulation and daily treatment.

Key Responsibilities

Anesthesia

  • Perform pre-anesthetic assessments including patient history review, physical examination, and evaluation of relevant diagnostics
  • Develop and implement individualized anesthetic protocols in collaboration with the supervising radiation oncologist
  • Induce, maintain, and monitor anesthesia for CT simulation scans and daily radiation therapy treatment fractions
  • Place intravenous catheters, manage endotracheal intubation, and maintain airway patency throughout each procedure
  • Continuously monitor and record vital parameters including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, end-tidal CO₂, SpO₂, and temperature
  • Recognize and respond promptly and effectively to anesthetic complications and emergencies
  • Recover patients from anesthesia and provide post-procedure monitoring and nursing care
  • Manage pain assessment and analgesic administration perioperatively per protocol

Radiation Oncology Workflow

  • Position and immobilize patients precisely and reproducibly for each treatment fraction in accordance with the radiation oncologist's setup instructions
  • Coordinate daily anesthesia scheduling to align with the radiation therapy treatment calendar
  • Assist with CT simulation setup and patient positioning for treatment planning scans
  • Maintain thorough and accurate anesthesia and patient records within the oncology information system
  • Communicate patient status, concerns, and changes to the oncology team and client services staff in a timely manner

Radiation Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all radiation safety protocols including proper use and monitoring of personal dosimetry badges
  • Adhere to ALARA principles and institutional radiation safety policies at all times
  • Maintain compliance with all federal, state, and institutional regulations regarding controlled substance handling and documentation
  • Maintain and perform basic troubleshooting of anesthesia equipment; report malfunctions promptly

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license in good standing — this is a firm requirement; applications without a current RVT license will not be considered
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on clinical experience running anesthesia independently in a veterinary setting
  • Demonstrated proficiency in small animal anesthetic induction, maintenance, monitoring, and recovery
  • Strong working knowledge of multiparameter anesthetic monitoring equipment
  • Experience managing anesthetic emergencies and critically ill patients
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to perform consistently in a high-stakes, repetitive clinical environment
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills within a specialty care setting

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is an exclusively radiation oncology-based position. The RVT Anesthetist works within a radiation therapy facility and will have regular, controlled exposure to low-level ionizing radiation. All staff are required to wear dosimetry monitoring devices and comply strictly with radiation safety policies at all times. The role involves frequent standing, bending, and patient handling, including lifting patients and equipment up to 50 lbs. Schedule adherence is essential, as daily treatment fractions run on fixed timing.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 8:00am - 6:00pm, half day on Friday every 6 weeks
  • Salary: $24.00–$29.00 / hour, based on experience with anesthetic protocols

Benefits

  • Discount on veterinary care and pet insurance options for your furry family
  • Mental health support with Talkspace
  • Uniform allowance
  • Learning and growth opportunities
  • Continuing education support for licensed team members
  • 401k retirement plan options with company match
  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance options — some plans may be paid up to 100%
  • Basic life insurance provided and other voluntary insurance options available for full-time team members
  • 6 weeks paid parental leave for full-time team members
  • Paid time off for full-time team members
