Job Description

As a Geotechnical Designer within AFRY Design Center, you will work in close collaboration with our Swedish geotechnical team in Western Sweden. You will be part of an international delivery organisation, contributing to complex and multidisciplinary projects.

Our Swedish operations cover a wide range of geotechnical assignments – from early-stage investigations to detailed design and construction support – often in collaboration with structural engineering teams. Projects include infrastructure, urban development and industrial clients.

The Swedish team consists of highly experienced geotechnical engineers. In this role, you will contribute to projects where advanced geotechnical design and analysis are essential.

About the team in Sweden:

In the Southwest region of Sweden, we are a team of approximately 30 highly skilled geotechnical engineers based in Gothenburg. We work with a wide range of geotechnical assignments – from early project phases to detailed design and construction support.

Our projects are characterised by high demands on technical quality, coordination and delivery, particularly in complex and multidisciplinary projects where geotechnical design plays a central role. A key focus area is the design and dimensioning of retaining structures and sheet pile walls in challenging ground conditions, especially soft clay.

To meet a growing demand for advanced geotechnical design expertise, we are strengthening our team with international resources. We are specifically looking for a self-driven and experienced geotechnical design engineer who can take a leading technical role in this area. The role also includes contributing to knowledge sharing and supporting competence development within the organisation.

In addition to our design work, we operate our own field investigation unit with four rigs based in Gothenburg, as well as a geotechnical laboratory performing both routine and advanced testing. This allows us to maintain strong control over the entire process – from site investigation to final design.

Your key responsibilities are:

  • Designing and dimensioning geotechnical structures, with a strong focus on sheet pile walls and retaining structures.
  • Performing advanced geotechnical analyses, particularly in soft clay conditions.
  • Taking technical responsibility for selected projects and ensuring high-quality engineering deliverables.
  • Collaborating within multidisciplinary teams alongside structural engineers and other technical disciplines.
  • Preparing technical documentation, design calculations, and engineering reports.
  • Providing geotechnical expertise and specialist input throughout all project phases.
  • Supporting internal teams and contributing to knowledge sharing within the geotechnical engineering community.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and fostering competence development across the team.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of design methods, engineering practices, and technical standards.

Qualifications

We expect that you have:

  • Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering
  • At least 5 years of experience in geotechnical design
  • Proven experience in design and dimensioning of geotechnical structures
  • Experience working in soft clay conditions
  • Strong knowledge of Eurocode and relevant geotechnical standards
  • Experience in numerical modelling tools (e.g. PLAXIS, SLOPE/W)
  • Good command of English

We appreciate if you have:

  • Experience with Swedish geotechnical conditions, especially Western Sweden
  • Experience with CAD/BIM tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Quadri)
  • Experience from international projects
