Applications Manager

Abingdon, Oxfordshire (onsite, with global travel)

Would you like to shape how next-generation semiconductor tech is delivered at scale?

As our Applications Manager, you’ll be leading a high-impact team working directly with customers to deploy, optimise and scale advanced AFM-based metrology systems. Sitting at the intersection of applications engineering, product, and global customer delivery, you’ll be influencing how our technology performs in the field — and how it evolves.

Reward & Benefits

  • £79,000 – £92,000 (depending on experience)
  • 25 days annual leave
  • Private healthcare + death in service
  • 4% pension (salary sacrifice)
  • EMI share scheme (real ownership)

You’ll be joining a growing deep-tech business (100+ people) backed by global investors including Applied Ventures.

Why this role is different

  • Leading a global applications engineering team delivering into semiconductor fabs
  • Working with next-generation AFM metrology technology used by leading industry players
  • Shaping how systems are deployed, optimised, and scaled globally
  • Playing a direct role in product improvement through customer insight

A typical day for an Applications Manager could look like this

  • Leading and developing a global team of application engineers
  • Working directly with semiconductor customers to understand use cases and challenges
  • Supporting installation, acceptance testing, and optimisation of complex instrumentation
  • Acting as the escalation point for advanced technical issues
  • Translating customer needs into practical engineering solutions
  • Collaborating with product and engineering teams to improve system performance
  • Supporting pre-sales demos and technical feasibility discussions
  • Driving continuous improvement in how systems are deployed and used
  • Supporting global customer sites (with occasional international travel)

What we’re looking for in our Applications Manager

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring:

  • Experience in applications engineering, systems engineering, or field-based technical roles
  • Background working with complex, high-precision instrumentation (e.g. semiconductor, metrology, AFM)
  • Strong experience delivering customer-facing technical solutions
  • Confidence leading, mentoring, or developing a small technical team
  • Ability to translate real-world problems into clear technical solutions
  • Systems-level understanding across mechanical, optical, and electronic systems

Nice to have:

  • Experience working in the semiconductor industry
  • Exposure to AFM, metrology, or inspection systems
  • Experience supporting global deployments and customers
  • Background in a scaling or high-growth tech environment

Education:

  • Degree in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or similar or equivalent hands-on / industry experience

We look for the five Cs from our colleagues:

  • Customer Focused – Staying close to customer needs and consistently delivering value that builds trust.
  • Caring – Creating a supportive environment where people look out for each other and can thrive.
  • Collaborative – Sharing ideas openly, communicating clearly, and working together to solve problems.
  • Commitment – Taking ownership, following through on promises, and acting with integrity.
  • Continuous Improvement – Always learning, challenging the status quo, and improving how we work and deliver.

Infinitesima was spun out of the University of Bristol in 2001 and has been developing innovative metrology solutions which improve speed and precision in the manufacture of semiconductors. The company’s technology combines the 3-dimensional surface detection capability of atomic force microscopy (AFM), with high-speed laser activation and the accuracy of interferometry. The Rapid Probe Microscope (RPM™) is protected by an extensive patent portfolio. The company’s RPM™ technology is being used by leading semiconductor equipment companies globally. Semiconductor devices provide the foundations on which progress in the technology sector are enabled. From Smartphones to Artificial Intelligence, 5G communications to autonomous vehicles, all are made possible through advances in semiconductor processes. Scaling these processes requires sub-nanometer measurement of increasingly complex 3D structures to enable more powerful devices. Based in Abingdon, UK, we are a high calibre team of 80 people and continue to grow. We are backed by global financial and industry investors including Applied Ventures, the strategic venture arm of the industry leading equipment company.
