Job Summary:

CycloKinetics is seeking two Mechanical Engineering Interns to support the engineering department in the design, fabrication, testing, and improvement of equipment used throughout our biorefinery operations.

This is a temporary, hands-on role that combines engineering design with practical implementation. The interns will work closely with engineers, fabricators, technicians, and operations personnel to develop mechanical systems and equipment while gaining exposure to real-world industrial engineering projects.

The ideal candidate(s) will possess strong mechanical aptitude, proficiency with CAD software, and a desire to learn how engineered systems are designed, built, tested, and operated.

This role is temporary, working through the summer Monday – Friday 8 hours daily / 40 hours weekly. With one position that will work summer Monday – Friday 8 hours daily / 40 hours week and after summer will work 5 to 10 hours weekly until the end of the internship.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Strong commitment to safety is required.
  • Perform job duties in a safety-regulated environment where chemicals are used.
  • Create and modify 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed fabrication drawings using Autodesk Inventor (basically identical to Solidworks).
  • Assist with mechanical design of process equipment, piping systems, structures, fixtures, and custom components.
  • Support engineering projects through concept development, design reviews, fabrication, assembly, and testing.
  • Generate and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, bills of materials, and technical specifications.
  • Assist with field measurements, equipment inspections, and design verification activities.
  • Work with engineers, fabricators, and technicians to troubleshoot equipment and identify improvements.
  • Support collection and analysis of engineering data to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Participate in equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and testing activities.
  • Assist in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies and engineering standards.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to identify high-impact opportunities.
  • Participate in meetings and planning sessions, providing work updates or summaries as requested.
  • Work is performed on-site at your designated work location.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, test results, and data, in accordance with company guidelines on documentation, storage, and control.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Manager/Supervisor or designated leadership.

Education and Experience:

  • Currently pursuing or graduated in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency with CAD software, preferably Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks and assemblies / drawings.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in how equipment and machinery function.
  • Shop experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing, fabrication, machining, welding, or mechanical assembly concepts.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment.
  • Hands-on experience with automotive, aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, racing, farm equipment, or other mechanical systems a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to work with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in common computer tools and web-based applications.
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized, with a proactive, self-driven approach and demonstrated record of taking initiative to drive scientific and operational goals.

Physical Demands:

Frequent lifting and moving of items up to fifty (50) pounds*, bending, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, pulling, prolonged standing or sitting may be required. Must have safe work habits and perform all duties in accordance with company safety policies. Personal protective equipment is provided by the company, and its use is mandatory.
