Location: Remote – Philippines

Employment Type: Full-Time

Working Hours: Must be available to collaborate during Canadian/North American business hours

Role Overview

The Accounting Manager / Controller will provide senior-level oversight of accounting operations and client engagements. This position requires someone who can “see the forest, not just the trees”—a strategic accounting leader who understands how individual transactions, reconciliations, processes, and reports affect the overall financial health of a business.

The successful candidate will have at least seven years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on controllership or accounting management responsibilities. Strong knowledge of Canadian and/or U.S. accounting practices is essential.

This is not purely a transactional accounting role. The Accounting Manager / Controller will be expected to review the work of accounting team members, identify risks and inconsistencies, improve processes, communicate financial issues clearly, and provide management with reliable financial information for decision-making.

Responsibilities

Accounting and Controllership

  • Oversee the complete accounting cycle for multiple companies or client accounts.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring deadlines and reporting requirements are met.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, payroll entries, and intercompany transactions.
  • Review balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports, and supporting schedules for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure all financial activity is properly recorded, classified, supported, and reconciled.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and identify accounting, reporting, or compliance risks.
  • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax professionals, and other financial partners.
  • Support audit, tax, due-diligence, and financial-review requirements by maintaining complete and traceable documentation.

Financial Review and Management Reporting

  • Analyze financial results and identify unusual balances, variances, trends, and potential business risks.
  • Look beyond individual transactions to understand their broader financial and operational impact.
  • Prepare and review monthly management reporting packages.
  • Provide meaningful commentary on financial performance, cash flow, profitability, working capital, and operating results.
  • Translate complex accounting matters into clear, practical recommendations for clients and senior management.
  • Assist with budgets, forecasts, cash flow projections, and financial models.
  • Ensure management reports provide an accurate and decision-useful view of the business.

Team Leadership and Quality Control

  • Supervise, guide, and review the work of bookkeepers, accountants, and other finance team members.
  • Delegate responsibilities while maintaining accountability for the accuracy and timeliness of deliverables.
  • Establish review procedures, closing schedules, accounting checklists, and quality-control standards.
  • Coach team members on Canadian and U.S. accounting practices, documentation, and professional judgment.
  • Identify knowledge or performance gaps and provide clear, constructive feedback.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex reconciliations, reporting issues, and client concerns.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Client and Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as a senior accounting contact for assigned clients and business stakeholders.
  • Understand each client’s operations, financial structure, reporting needs, and business priorities.
  • Lead accounting meetings and confidently explain financial results, issues, and recommended actions.
  • Anticipate client needs instead of waiting for problems or instructions to arise.
  • Maintain professional, responsive, and solutions-oriented communication.
  • Manage multiple engagements and competing priorities without sacrificing quality.
  • Work closely with fractional CFOs and senior advisors on reporting, forecasting, financing, restructuring, and other strategic initiatives.

Process Improvement and Systems

  • Evaluate existing accounting workflows and identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Develop and document accounting policies, standard operating procedures, month-end checklists, and reporting processes.
  • Improve the use of accounting software, reporting platforms, spreadsheets, and supporting systems.
  • Help transition clients from informal bookkeeping practices to structured, controller-level financial operations.
  • Support accounting-system implementations, cleanups, migrations, and process standardization.
  • Ensure processes can support growing, changing, or multi-entity businesses.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least seven years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as an Accounting Manager, Financial Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or in a comparable leadership role.
  • Strong controllership experience, including oversight of month-end close, reconciliations, reporting, internal controls, and accounting operations.
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian and/or U.S. accounting principles and business practices.
  • Experience working with Canadian or U.S.-based companies, clients, or accounting firms.
  • Strong understanding of balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, and management reporting.
  • Experience reviewing and supervising the work of junior accountants or bookkeepers.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Experience with cloud-based accounting systems such as QuickBooks Online and Xero.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with North American clients and senior business leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA, CPA candidate, Chartered Accountant, or equivalent accounting designation.
  • Experience working in public accounting, outsourced accounting, fractional CFO services, or financial advisory.
  • Experience managing accounting for multiple entities or multiple clients.
  • Knowledge of both Canadian and U.S. accounting environments.
  • Experience with financial modelling, cash flow forecasting, budgeting, or deal support.
  • Familiarity with technology companies, startups, professional services, e-commerce, real estate, healthcare, blockchain, or other growth-stage businesses.
  • Experience supporting companies undergoing expansion, capital raising, restructuring, acquisitions, or financial-process transformation.
