Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Safety Quality Assurance Inspector to support a long-term assignment at San Diego International Airport (SAN). This position is responsible for monitoring and evaluating construction safety performance across multiple concurrent airport infrastructure and facilities projects to ensure compliance with contract requirements, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.

Working under general supervision, the Safety QA Inspector conducts field inspections, audits contractor safety programs, documents safety observations, and verifies compliance with applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), California OSHA (Cal/OSHA), Airport Authority, and project-specific safety requirements. The role serves as a key resource to project teams, contractors, and stakeholders by helping identify risks, promote safe work practices, and support corrective actions that protect airport personnel, contractors, passengers, and the public.

The successful candidate will have experience supporting complex construction projects in active operational environments and possess a strong working knowledge of construction safety regulations, accident prevention practices, hazard recognition, incident investigation, and contractor safety management. This position requires regular field presence and may include night and weekend work to support ongoing construction activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections of airport construction projects to verify compliance with contract requirements, applicable regulations, and established safety standards.
  • Monitor contractor safety performance and work practices, identifying unsafe conditions and recommending corrective actions.
  • Review contractor safety plans, procedures, and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and project specifications.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports, safety observations, corrective action reports, and other project documentation.
  • Track, monitor, and report safety performance metrics and trends.
  • Assist with incident, injury, and accident investigations, including data collection, root cause analysis, documentation, and reporting.
  • Conduct workplace audits, inspections, and safety assessments of construction activities, equipment, and work areas.
  • Verify proper use, maintenance, and availability of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Support implementation of construction safety programs related to hazard communication, respiratory protection, fall protection, scaffolding, excavation, crane operations, and heavy equipment activities.
  • Assist with development and delivery of construction safety training and awareness programs.
  • Coordinate with project managers, contractors, consultants, and Airport Authority representatives to promote compliance and continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable safety regulations, industry standards, and emerging best practices.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. plus six (6) years of relevant experience, or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to maintain eligibility under airport driving requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Construction Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience performing construction safety inspections on commercial, aviation, transportation, or infrastructure construction projects.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification.
  • OSHA 500 Trainer Certification.
  • 24-Hour HAZWOPER Certification or higher.
  • Competent Person designation in Excavation and Trenching.
  • Competent Person designation in Scaffolding and Falsework.
  • Competent Person designation in Fall Protection.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Experience reviewing contractor safety plans, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and regulatory compliance documentation.
  • Experience conducting construction safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and construction industry safety regulations and standards.
  • Experience supporting aviation, airport, transportation, rail, transit, or other large-scale infrastructure construction projects.
  • Experience working within active operational environments where construction activities must be coordinated with ongoing public operations.
  • Experience tracking safety metrics, preparing inspection reports, and documenting corrective actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with contractors, project teams, and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic inspection reporting systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain airport security clearance and required badging.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to maintain eligibility under airport driving requirements.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and non-traditional schedules in support of construction operations.
