Program Description
This role will be supporting the National Weather Service (NWS), Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Operations Center (ROC). As a member of their Operations Branch Radar Support Team, you will support the 158 Doppler weather radars that provide critical tornado and severe weather warning observations across the Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Korea. The team is involved in every phase of the hardware and software lifecycle across business and technical applications; they also provide facility support, program management, and quality assurance. This contract involves customer touch points within NWS, Department of Transportation, and the Air Force.
We are seeking a Meteorologist to join the National Weather Service (NWS) Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) Radar Operations Center (ROC) in support of the Operations Branch Radar Support Team. This role involves monitoring and troubleshooting the WSR-88D weather radar systems, collaborating with electronic technicians to maintain fleet integrity, and providing briefings on radar status and severe weather events. The position requires experience with Doppler radar meteorology and weather radar systems, as well as proficiency in computer systems, particularly Linux, and strong customer relations skills.
Job Responsibilities
Radar Operations & Data Quality
• Monitor WSR-88D radar performance and evaluate real-time data quality across the fleet
• Identify, diagnose, and document anomalies in radar products and system behavior
• Perform meteorological validation of radar outputs to ensure accuracy and reliability
Troubleshooting & Fleet Support
• Coordinate with ROC electronics technicians and engineers to isolate and resolve system issues
• Provide meteorological expertise during system troubleshooting, maintenance, and fault analysis
• Support lifecycle sustainment activities, including testing, certification, and validation
Operational Coordination
• Deliver clear, concise written and oral briefings on radar status, operational risks, and weather impacts
• Support operational decision-making during severe weather events, including tornado outbreaks and hurricanes
• Participate in Unit Radar Committee (URC) and other operational coordination meetings
Event & Surge Support
• Support 24-hour operations during high-impact weather events
• Assess environmental impacts to radar site availability and performance
Analysis & Reporting
• Produce technical reports and trend analysis related to radar performance and data quality
• Assist with development and refinement of operational procedures and best practices
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
• Interface with NWS, Department of Defense, FAA/DoT, and other stakeholders
• Provide customer-focused support while maintaining mission priorities
Required Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related discipline
Experience
• Experience with Doppler weather radar systems (WSR-88D preferred)
• Demonstrated experience analyzing and interpreting radar data and products
Technical Skills
• Familiarity with Linux-based systems (Red Hat preferred)
• Experience with scripting or programming (e.g., Python, shell scripting) preferred
• Understanding of radar system operations, data flow, and signal interpretation
• Experience with databases or data analysis tools
Knowledge
• Knowledge of radar system testing, calibration, certification, and validation processes
• Understanding of severe weather processes and operational impacts
Communication
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to translate technical findings into actionable insights
Work Schedule
• This position typically follows a Monday–Friday, 40-hour work week (8-hour shifts)
• The Radar Support Team provides operational coverage from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, requiring rotating early and late shifts
• Shifts are structured with overlapping coverage to ensure continuous mission support and effective handoff between team members
• Schedule flexibility may be required to support severe weather operations and surge events, including occasional extended hours
