About the team
The Platform Portability team is responsible for scaling the Roku OS to run on a wider variety of hardware. This team operates at the intersection of hardware and software, building clean abstractions and ensuring portability across diverse platforms. The team values deep curiosity, diversity of thought, and flexibility, seeking engineers who are driven to understand how systems work at every layer. The technology stack is broad, spanning from hardware abstraction layers to high-level OS components, including Linux, Android, Tizen, C, C++, boot loaders, drivers, and multimedia and streaming technologies.
About the role
Roku is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Platform Portability team, where you will develop and evolve the RokuOS Platform Abstraction Layer (PAL) to enable Roku OS to run across a growing range of devices. In this role, you will architect clean software abstractions that bridge hardware and software, ensuring modularity and portability across diverse platforms. You will write high-performance, reliable code and build the tools necessary to support seamless platform integration. Collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams, you will debug complex issues while optimizing system performance and product quality. This role offers the chance to work across the team's broad technology stack and to make a meaningful impact on the scale and reach of Roku's streaming platform.
What you will be doing
- Developing and evolving the RokuOS Platform Abstraction Layer (PAL) to support new devices and features
- Architecting RokuOS components with appropriate modularity, portability, and abstraction layers
- Building tools and infrastructure needed to support platform portability across diverse hardware and software ecosystems
- Writing software designed for easy portability to new and existing platforms
- Demonstrating expert-level proficiency in C and C++ development
- Building scalable, highly reliable software that performs consistently across diverse hardware environments
- Working both independently and in small groups to ship new features on schedule
- Debugging software issues with a focus on optimizing performance and improving product quality
- Investigating and resolving complex problems that affect users by diving deep into system behavior
We're excited if you have
- 5+ years of experience developing Linux-based consumer electronics products
- Strong C and C++ programming skills
- Demonstrated skill in API design and developing portable, cross-platform code
- A proven track record of success with embedded Linux development projects
- A passion for building robust system-level and portability abstractions
- Experience with Wi-Fi, audio/video streaming, or secure video playback technologies
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Familiarity with consumer products, user interfaces, and networking functionality
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
- AI literacy and curiosity — you have either tried Generative AI tools in your previous work or outside of work, or are curious about Gen AI and have explored it
