Steel Fabrication Technician – Architectural Metals

Location: Richmond, VA
Schedule: First Shift | Monday–Friday | 5:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Compensation: Starting at $22.00 per hour, with higher rates available based on experience
Additional Hours: Occasional Saturday overtime may be required

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled fabrication professional to support the production of custom steel and architectural metal products in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role involves transforming engineering drawings and fabrication plans into finished assemblies while maintaining high standards for safety, precision, and workmanship.

Successful candidates will have experience working with miscellaneous metals, structural components, and fabricated assemblies, along with the ability to adapt to changing production priorities and project deadlines.

### Key Responsibilities

Fabrication & Assembly

  • Fabricate and assemble custom metal products including handrails, stair systems, ladders, platforms, and related steel components
  • Perform layout, measuring, fitting, cutting, welding, grinding, and finishing operations
  • Build assemblies according to fabrication drawings, specifications, and production requirements
  • Ensure completed products meet dimensional and quality standards before release
  • Blueprint Interpretation

    • Read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication details, work orders, and technical documents
    • Verify measurements and specifications before beginning fabrication work
    • Identify potential fabrication issues and communicate solutions to supervisors or project personnel
    • Equipment Operation

      • Safely operate fabrication equipment including:
        • Saws
        • Shears
        • Press brakes
        • Welding equipment
        • Additional shop machinery as needed
        • Conduct work in accordance with established safety procedures and shop practices
        • Maintain equipment awareness and report maintenance concerns when identified
        • Quality & Production

          • Produce work that meets craftsmanship expectations while maintaining production schedules
          • Inspect finished assemblies for accuracy, fit, and overall quality
          • Prioritize assignments effectively when multiple projects are in progress
          • Adapt to changing production demands and shifting project timelines
          • Team Collaboration

            • Coordinate with supervisors, engineers, and fellow shop personnel to ensure efficient workflow
            • Contribute to problem-solving efforts related to fabrication methods and production challenges
            • Maintain a professional, team-oriented approach in a deadline-driven environment
            • Shop Organization & Safety

            • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
            • Follow all company safety requirements and operating procedures
            • Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE)
            • Support a culture of quality, accountability, and workplace safety
### Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in metal fabrication, particularly involving miscellaneous metals, rail systems, or similar fabricated products
  • Proficiency with FCAW welding processes; welding certifications are considered an advantage
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication documents
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
  • Effective organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments in a production-focused environment
  • Team-oriented mindset with a willingness to adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical work in an industrial setting
  • ### Work Environment
  • Indoor fabrication shop environment
  • Exposure to welding fumes, metal dust, paint vapors, exhaust, and industrial noise
  • Frequent interaction with moving machinery, electrical equipment, and fabrication tools
  • Early morning weekday schedule with occasional overtime and weekend work based on production demands
  • Required use of safety glasses, hearing protection, protective footwear, and other assigned PPE
  • Long pants must be worn at all times within production areas
