Akicita Federal is hiring a Pharmacist to deliver comprehensive pharmaceutical care to the inmate population served by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) at FCI Beckley in Beckley, WV. In this role, you will be the primary licensed dispensing authority on-site, working directly alongside physicians, advanced practice practitioners, and pharmacy technicians to ensure safe, effective medication management in a correctional healthcare setting. This is a full-time, Monday–Friday position offering steady, meaningful work in a structured clinical environment.
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the medication delivery system, ensuring all pharmaceuticals are properly packaged, labeled, stored, and dispensed in accordance with established procedures
- Review and profile all medication orders for drug–drug interactions, drug–disease interactions, therapeutic duplications, appropriate dosing, and adverse drug reaction risks before dispensing
- Maintain a daily inventory of controlled substances, perform monthly narcotic audits, and report all medication variances to appropriate staff
- Compound or verify all extemporaneous preparations and parenteral products, including reviewing and editing physician orders for IV therapies
- Serve as the on-site drug information specialist—advising medical and nursing staff on formulary options, dosing, toxicity, and alternatives, and supporting the BOP National Formulary compliance process
- Counsel patients on their medications and provide education to both inmates and clinical staff on safe and effective medication use
- Document all clinical encounters and maintain accurate, up-to-date entries in the Bureau of Prisons Electronic Medical Record system
What sets candidates apart:
- Prior experience practicing pharmacy in a correctional, federal, or similarly structured institutional healthcare environment
- Familiarity with the BOP National Formulary and non-formulary request processes
- Experience supervising or checking the work of pharmacy technicians in a high-volume dispensing setting
- Background in compounding or preparation of parenteral/IV products
- Comfort navigating electronic medical record systems in a clinical setting
