Grant Writer

About the role
Copper needs some help getting our grant writing in order. We have a NYSERDA contract whose Development stage is wrapping up, and a number of those reports have come back for small revisions that we'd like to get over the finish line. Our BENEFIT REST-NET grant from the DOE also just got renewed for Budget Period 2, which comes with its own ongoing reporting. On top of that, we've got a handful of new grant applications we'd like to put together.
The role starts as a three month, full-time contract. If it's a good fit on both sides and our grant writing needs continue to grow, there's a real possibility this becomes a permanent, full-time role at the end of the contract.
What you'll do
The first job is getting our NYSERDA Development stage reports finalized. That means working through the existing drafts, addressing the feedback we've gotten back, and making sure each one is ready to submit.
After that, you'll own quarterly reporting on our DOE grant through Budget Period 2. You'll work from existing scaffolding and prior submissions, check in with us to confirm details, and keep us on schedule.
You'll also help us put together new grant applications as they come up. We have a running list of opportunities and could use someone who can take a kickoff conversation and turn it into a strong first draft.
This will also include working with project managers on the side of the grant management organizations to update on our progress and manage expected deliverables.
Along the way, we'd love your help building up a library of reusable content (company background, technology descriptions, project narratives) that we can pull from for future applications.
What you'll bring
Experience writing or revising government grants, ideally for federal or state energy programs. NYSERDA and DOE EERE experience would be especially helpful, but it isn't a hard requirement.
Comfort working from existing drafts and reviewer feedback. We're not asking you to start from a blank page, we're asking you to create new documents, and to clean up and finalize some of the content that we already have in place.
A good eye for detail. The reports that come back for revision usually come back for small things, and we'd love someone who catches those before they go out.
Comfort with technical material. You don't need to be an engineer, but you should be willing to ask good questions and learn enough to write clearly about batteries, induction cooking, heat pumps, and how they fit together in a home.
The ability to manage your own time and stay in touch with us as you go. This is a contract role and we'll trust you to keep things moving.
Engagement details
This is a 1099 independent contractor role for three months, full-time. We'll provide scope, source material, and access to the people on our team who can answer questions. We will provide you with a laptop.
Rate is $100 an hour for roughly 40 hours a week, invoiced however works best for you. At the end of the three months, if things are going well and our grant writing needs continue to grow, we'd love to talk about converting this into a full-time, permanent role with salary, benefits, and equity.
We're hoping to start as soon as we can find the right person.
