Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Urban Planner for our Urbanism & Planning team, based out of Melbourne. The successful candidate will be keen to work in a collaborative environment with a team of urban planners, urban designers, landscape architects and architects, as well as all our cross-business line technical specialists, in our ANZ Urbanism & Planning team, which forms part of AECOMs Buildings and Places team.

This role is an excellent opportunity for someone who is wanting to accelerate their career and grow their technical and professional skills across a range of development and infrastructure projects.

How you’ll make a difference:

  • Lead various planning projects and provide support to our directors and project managers in preparing high-quality planning reports, due diligence assessments, and approval documentation for major infrastructure projects. Ensure projects run to schedule and budget and deliver high-quality outcomes for our clients.
  • Contribute to the development and coordination of planning assessments for large-scale transport and energy projects, including airports and other complex developments.
  • Undertake research, policy reviews, and analysis to inform project planning strategies, approval pathways, and compliance with statutory planning requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across AECOM to support delivery of planning inputs on major project approvals, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and alignment with client and regulatory expectations.
  • In your client-facing role, deliver high-quality project outcomes and support directors in generating future business for the broader planning team. Actively participate in the development of high-quality fee proposals and bids.
  • Mentor junior planners within the team, aiding with their professional and technical development.

Qualifications

The qualities that help you thrive:

  • Degree in Town or Urban Planning (or a closely related discipline) with approximately 4–5 years of professional urban or environmental planning experience, ideally gained within a consultancy.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting the preparation of planning assessments, due diligence reports, and development applications for large-scale transport, energy, or infrastructure projects.
  • Proven ability to contribute effectively within multi-disciplinary project teams, collaborating with engineers, environmental scientists, and design professionals to deliver high-quality planning outcomes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing clear, concise reports and liaising confidently with clients, stakeholders, and approval authorities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, with working knowledge of GIS or other spatial tools considered advantageous.
