We are building AI to simulate the world through merging art and science.
We believe that world models are at the frontier of progress in artificial intelligence. Language models alone won’t solve the world’s hardest problems – robotics, disease, scientific discovery. Real progress requires models that experience the world and learn from their mistakes, the same way that humans do. And this kind of trial and error can be massively accelerated when done in simulation, rather than in the real world.
World models offer the most clear path to general-purpose simulation, changing how stories are told, how scientific progress is made and how the next frontiers of humanity are reached.
Our team consists of creative, open minded, caring and ambitious people who are determined to change the world. We aspire to continuously build impossible things and our ability to do so relies on building an incredible team. If you are driven to do the same, we'd love to hear from you.
About the role
*Open to hiring remote across the US + Europe — we also have offices in NYC, San Francisco, and Seattle
We're looking for a Trust & Safety Engineer to help ensure Runway's generative AI models have a positive impact as they reach millions of users. You'll be embedded across product, research, and policy teams — serving as a core safety partner from early design through post-launch monitoring.
This role sits at the intersection of model safety and platform infrastructure. You'll design and run red teaming systems to surface harmful outputs before they reach production, build tooling to enforce content policies at scale, and help define safety strategies for capabilities that don't exist yet. The work is high-ambiguity: you'll often be creating the playbook, not following one.
You'll collaborate most closely with legal and policy to translate evolving guidelines into technical controls, with product and API teams to ship safety features, and with ML research when evaluating new model behaviors. The ideal candidate is a strong generalist engineer who's comfortable context-switching between writing Python evals, building TypeScript tooling, querying ClickHouse for abuse signals, and debugging AWS/GCP infrastructure.
Please note that this role will occasionally involve handling sensitive content, including content that is sexual, violent, or otherwise disturbing.
A peek at our technical stack
Our API for content moderation and policy enforcement is written in TypeScript, and runs in ECS containers on AWS Fargate. We leverage multiple AWS-native components, such as S3, CloudFront, Lambda, Kinesis, and SQS, as building blocks of our infrastructure.
Our inference backend — where safety checks run inline with generation - is written in Python (PyTorch), and is deployed across multiple clusters. We heavily leverage LLMs - both Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini - as part of our safety and moderation systems. We invest in Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring, and Terraform to manage our infrastructure.
What you’ll do
Serve as a core safety partner embedded across product and research teams, providing Trust & Safety engineering support for all launches - from early design review through post-launch monitoring
Build and maintain safety infrastructure that ensures Runway's models have a positive impact on the world as they reach millions of users
Design, execute, and continuously improve red teaming systems to proactively surface model safety issues, such as harmful content generation, filter bypasses, and policy-violating outputs, before they reach production
Translate ambiguous, fast-evolving T&S challenges into concrete technical solutions, often without an existing playbook; comfort with navigating uncertainty and proposing novel approaches is essential
Improve the performance, reliability, and code quality of our codebases
What you’ll need
3+ years of experience in software engineering, with production experience in Python or TypeScript
A proactive, ownership-oriented mindset - you'll own systems end-to-end (infrastructure, monitoring, logging, metrics, incident response) and be responsible for identifying risks, not just responding to tickets
Comfort working across the stack - from writing model evaluation scripts to building internal tooling to debugging infrastructure issues in AWS or GCP
Experience with data pipelines or analytics infrastructure (we use ClickHouse heavily for abuse detection and policy enforcement signals)
Ability to translate ambiguous, fast-evolving policy requirements into concrete technical solutions - you'll often be defining the approach, not following an existing playbook
Strong written communication skills; you'll work closely with legal, policy, and product teams to document safety decisions and explain technical tradeoffs
Humility and open mindedness; at Runway we love to learn from one another
Runway strives to recruit and retain exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds while ensuring pay equity for our team. Our salary ranges are based on competitive market rates for our size, stage and industry, and salary is just one part of the overall compensation package we provide.
There are many factors that go into salary determinations, including relevant experience, skill level and qualifications assessed during the interview process, and maintaining internal equity with peers on the team. The range shared below is a general expectation for the function as posted, but we are also open to considering candidates who may be more or less experienced than outlined in the job description. In this case, we will communicate any updates in the expected salary range.
Lastly, the provided range is the expected salary for candidates in the U.S. Outside of those regions, there may be a change in the range, which again, will be communicated to candidates.
