Graphic Designer (Book Design)

ERG Media is looking for a full-time Graphic Designer with a strong focus on editorial and book design to join our growing team in Tokyo, Japan and Milano, Italy.

This role is based ideally in Tokyo and is intended for someone who lives and breathes typography, layout, print culture, publishing, and visual storytelling. You should have a deep appreciation for beautifully crafted books, magazines, packaging, and printed objects — especially within the worlds of design, architecture, automotive culture, fashion, music, travel, and Japan.

You will work closely with our creative directors, editors, photographers, and international clients on a range of ambitious publishing and brand projects.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop editorial layouts for books, magazines, and printed publications
• Create sophisticated typographic systems and grid structures
• Collaborate on book covers, packaging, slipcases, and publishing concepts
• Prepare print-ready files with strong production awareness
• Work closely with printers and production partners in Japan and internationally
• Participate in creative direction discussions and visual research
• Contribute to the evolution of ERG Media’s visual language
• Assist with presentation design and visual mockups when needed
• Support the design development of physical and digital publishing projects

Requirements

Requirements

• Fluent English (spoken and written)
• Based in Japan, ideally Tokyo
• 3+ years of professional graphic design experience
• Strong portfolio demonstrating editorial and book design work
• Excellent typography and layout skills
• Advanced Adobe Creative Suite skills, especially InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
• Strong understanding of print production, materials, and publishing workflows
• Exceptional attention to detail and visual consistency
• Interest in Japanese culture, architecture, fashion, music, publishing, and design
• Ability to work independently while collaborating internationally

Bonus Points

• Japanese language ability
• Experience working with luxury brands or publishers
• Knowledge of printing techniques, paper stocks, embossing, foil, and packaging production
• Motion or digital design experience
• Experience art directing photography or editorial shoots
