We have a new opening for a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon Physician at the Naval Medical Center San Diego...

CORE Duties:

  • Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the facility. 
  • Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.  
  • Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.  
  • Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physical, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.   Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.  
  • Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols. 

 Additional Duties:

  • A contracted Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego would be responsible for a comprehensive range of clinical and surgical duties, catering to a diverse patient population of active-duty military personnel, their dependents, and retirees.  The surgeon would be an integral part of the Orthopedic Surgery Department. 
  • Clinical and Patient Care Responsibilities Evaluation and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough patient evaluations, including detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and the ordering and interpretation of diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. This includes both outpatient and inpatient consultations. 
  • Non-Operative Management: Develop and oversee non-surgical treatment plans for a wide array of foot and ankle conditions. This includes prescribing medications, managing physical therapy referrals, and referring patients for orthotic devices. 
  • Pre- and Post-Operative Care: Manage all phases of surgical care, from initial pre-operative assessments and patient education to post-operative follow-up, wound care, and rehabilitation protocols. 
  • Patient Population: Treat a wide range of patients, from young, active-duty athletic personnel with sports-related injuries to older, retired veterans with degenerative conditions. The patient base also includes pediatric patients.  
  • Surgical Responsibilities 
  • Surgical Procedures: Perform a full spectrum of foot and ankle surgeries, including but not limited to: 
  • Fracture fixation and trauma reconstruction for injuries sustained in both combat and non-combat settings.  
  • Arthroscopic procedures for joint and cartilage repair. 
  • Total ankle replacements and other joint reconstruction surgeries. 
  • Tendon and ligament repair and reconstruction. 
  • Correction of complex foot and ankle deformities. 
  • High-Acuity and Complex Cases: Given NMCSD's role as referral hub, the surgeon must be proficient in managing complex, high-energy trauma, and severe extremity injuries.  
  • Limb Salvage: Participate in complex limb salvage procedures, which may involve collaboration with other surgical subspecialties such as plastic and vascular surgery.   
  • Administrative and Educational Duties 
  • Medical Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records for all patient encounters and surgical procedures. 
  • Teaching and Mentorship: As NMCSD is a major teaching hospital with a large orthopedic surgery residency program, the contracted surgeon would be expected to participate in the education and training of residents, medical students, and other medical personnel.  This could involve giving lectures, leading case conferences, and providing hands-on instructions in the operating room. 
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including other orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, physical therapists, and nurses to ensure comprehensive patient care.  
  • On-Call Responsibilities: Will be required to participate in an on-call rotation to provide urgent/emergent orthopedic care to all Tricare beneficiaries.  
  • During all call periods, the contractor is expected to be available to provide clinical guidance to residents, evaluate and manage orthopedic consultants, respond to urgent and emergent orthopedic conditions, and perform operative interventions clinically indicated in accordance with NMCSD facility policies and standards of care. 
  • Special Considerations for a Military Environment 
  • Operational Readiness: A key aspect of the role is to contribute to the operational readiness of active-duty service members by providing timely and effective care that enables them to return to their duties. 
  • Research: Opportunities for clinical and basic science research are available and encouraged within the department.  
  • CME: New hires will be expected to maintain CME for the purpose of licensure and American Board of Orthopedic Surgery certification.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday  7:00am - 4:00pm - 8.5 hour shifts

On-Call Hours: are from 0000 – 2359 Sunday through Saturday. Call responsibilities include a minimum of two (2) overnight call shifts per month, and one (1) weekend call shift every three (3) months. Overnight call coverage is defined as on-call availability from 1600 to 0700 the following morning. One (1) weekend call shift every three (3) months. Not to exceed 576 annual On-Call hours. Minimum two (2) overnight call-shifts per month. 

 Weekend call coverage is defined as continuous on-call availability from 0700 Friday through 0700 Monday. Following weekend call, the contractor shall provide post-call coverage on Monday from 0700 to 1600 to address any operative cases generated during the call period and to complete required clinical documentation and administrative duties.  

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. 
  • Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. 
  • Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. 
  • In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
  • Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Orthopedic Surgery). Experience may not be substituted for residency training that is required for the specialty identified.
  • Fellowship Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the required fellowship training in the subspecialty of the position to be filled (Foot and Ankle).  Experience may not be substituted for fellowship training that is required for the specialty identified.
  • Board Certification: Applicants must have successfully completed the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery Board certification.  Additionally, they must maintain their board certification status during their time at NMCSD. 
  • Life Support Certification: Possess current American Heart Assoc or American Red Cross BLS, ACLS & PALS certifications.
  • Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
