As the Newsletter Editor at The Spectator, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the magazine's high editorial standards. You will ensure that all content across our growing batch of newsletters is accurate, engaging, and adheres to the publication’s tone and style. Your keen eye for detail and passion for excellence will be vital in upholding the magazine's reputation for clarity and precision.
Key Responsibilities:
- Editing and proofreading the Morning Press newsletter, which goes out every weekday at 7 a.m., and writing and editing the Lunchtime Espresso newsletter, which goes out every weekday at 1 p.m.
- Editing our weekly newsletters, which include Reality Check, Ukraine in Focus and Spectator Life, and our monthly newsletter The Take Away.
- Managing our team of four daily newsletter writers and liaising with other newsletter writers to refine and enhance content.
- Ensuring all content aligns with The Spectator’s tone, style, and voice.
- Fact-checking to verify accuracy and authenticity of information.
- Adhering to tight deadlines while maintaining high editorial standards.
- Suggesting headlines, subheadings, and captions that capture the reader’s attention.
Requirements
- Knowledge of The Spectator and what readers do (and don’t) expect from us.
- Exceptional command of English, both written and spoken.
- Demonstrable experience on the subbing desk of a national newspaper.
- Ability to spot errors and inconsistencies with precision.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with editorial tools and software such as InDesign.
- A keen interest in current affairs that goes beyond nine to five engagement.
- A well-developed sense of humour and sense of the absurd.
