Product Marketing & Community Manager

CivicMarketplace

Why this role exists

Every city, county, and school district in America buys things. Roads, software, cleaning services, IT infrastructure. The total is somewhere north of two trillion dollars a year. And almost all of it moves through procurement processes designed for a different era: slow; paper-heavy; opaque and exhausting for everyone involved.

Civic Marketplace was built to fix that. We’re a modern, data-driven platform where government agencies discover, evaluate, and engage suppliers. Where businesses, especially smaller and growing ones, can actually find and win public sector work without needing a dedicated contracts team to navigate the maze.

We’re already being used by cities and agencies to run projects, source vendors, and unlock cooperative purchasing opportunities faster. And we’re now combining that marketplace infrastructure with AI in ways that could genuinely transform how procurement works. Not just incrementally but structurally.

The window to define what intelligent public procurement looks like is open right now. We need someone to help us tell that story and build the community around it. That’s this role.

About the role

This is a dual-function position, and that’s intentional. At Civic, product marketing and community management aren’t separate disciplines - they feed each other. The story you tell publicly shapes how suppliers and agencies understand what’s possible. The community you build gives you the raw material to make that story real through real voices, real outcomes and real proof.

You’ll own both sides. And you’ll do it with AI as a genuine collaborator, i.e. as a craft tool and not simply a shortcut. We use Claude daily, across everything from content pipelines to community response systems, and we want someone who brings genuine fluency and curiosity to that, not just checkbox familiarity.

This is a role for someone who cares about words. Who notices when a sentence is doing work and when it isn’t. Who can write for a procurement officer in Tucson and a supplier founder in Toledo and know instinctively what each of them needs to hear.

One important point on location: we're genuinely flexible, but timezone really does matter for a role like this. You'll need to be based somewhere between US Central and Central European Time, so the Americas east of the Rockies, the UK, or Europe.

What you’ll do

Shape the product narrative

  • Own positioning, messaging, and competitive narrative for Civic Marketplace, written for local government buyers, not tech audiences

  • Produce launch materials for new features: one-pagers, case studies, email sequences, landing pages. AI drafting tools keep the velocity up; your judgment keeps the quality there.

  • Partner with sales and partnerships to develop battle cards, pitch decks, and agency-specific collateral for partner channels

  • Build and maintain Claude-powered content pipelines: automated first-draft generation, content repurposing, and approval workflows for supplier and agency comms

  • Track funnel performance in HubSpot, from awareness to activation, and use behavioural trigger logic to sharpen conversion at each stage

Build and nurture the community

  • Own the supplier and agency community, from onboarding communications and engagement cadences to milestone recognition and feedback loops

  • Design and maintain bilingual (English/Spanish) outreach templates for supplier onboarding, AI-refined for tone and local context

  • Implement AI-assisted community response systems: using Claude to draft replies to common supplier queries, flagging edge cases for human review

  • Run regular community touchpoints (webinars, newsletters, async updates), translating product changes into language that actually resonates with procurement officers

  • Coordinate with partnership leads to activate COG and institutional partner networks as community amplification channels

Use AI as a core part of your craft

  • Claude : Your primary thinking and drafting partner, as well as for prompt engineering, workflow automation and content QA

  • HubSpot: Email sequences, behavioural triggers, pipeline reporting, contact segmentation

  • Make / Zapier: Multi-step automation: content routing, enrichment, approval workflows

  • Notion AI: Internal knowledge base, meeting synthesis, playbook documentation

  • Slack + AI agents: Community channels, async comms, AI-assisted response routing

  • PostHog / Analytics: Community engagement signals, activation drop-off, content performance

What you'll bring

You'll need:

  • 3+ years in product marketing, content strategy, or community management

  • A demonstrable writing voice (we’ll ask you to show us examples of work you’re proud of)

  • Active, fluent user of Claude or a comparable AI writing tool

  • Experience building or running HubSpot workflows

  • Comfortable holding your own in both a city procurement office and a startup standup

  • At ease across US and UK time zones

You'll stand out if you have:

  • A govtech, public sector, or civic tech background

  • Fluency in English and Spanish (especially valuable for supplier onboarding)

  • Experience with cooperative purchasing or procurement platforms

  • Familiarity with COG, NIGP, or US local government procurement

  • Built AI prompt libraries, automation playbooks, or content pipelines from scratch

Why you’ll love this role

  • The story is yours to write. Civic Marketplace is early enough that the voice, the community, the content playbook: none of it is fixed. You’re not inheriting someone else’s framework. You’re building it.

  • The problem is genuinely important. Public procurement touches every road, school, and hospital. Getting it right matters in ways that most B2B SaaS doesn’t.

  • The AI opportunity is real. We’re not bolting AI onto existing workflows. We’re rethinking what’s possible when procurement becomes genuinely agentic, and you’ll be part of figuring out how to communicate that.

  • You’ll work with people who care. Small team, direct access to founders, genuine investment in doing things well. We move fast, but we don’t move sloppy.

  • It works in both directions. We’re genuinely transatlantic, not just in where people work but in how we think. If you’re in Birmingham, Alabama or Birmingham England, you’ll be equally at home.

How we work

  • Build bridges to help customers win.
We are obsessively focused on helping both agencies and suppliers succeed. That’s not a value statement. It’s the job.

  • High velocity, high ownership.
We move quickly, make decisions, and take responsibility for outcomes. There’s no one to hand things off to and no one to hide behind.

  • In the arena.
We stay close to our users. We learn from them directly. We build based on what we see, not what we assume.

  • Learning quotient.
Rapid iteration isn’t just a process. It’s a mindset. We’d rather be wrong fast and right eventually than slow and cautious throughout.

The interview process

We move fast. Getting back to someone today beats tomorrow, and we think a slow hiring process is its own kind of signal. All interviews are via video conferencing by default.

We’ll ask to see something you’ve written. We’ll talk about how you think, not just what you’ve done. And we’ll tell you everything we know about where Civic Marketplace is going, because we want you to be choosing us as much as we’re choosing you.

Please keep us posted on your timeline. We’ll move to match it where we can.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary + early-stage equity

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • Flexible PTO
