Field Automation Engineer

OpsMill

Posted about 10 hours ago

If you’ve shipped real network automation and care about outcomes more than slideware, this role puts you on the front line where engineering meets customers. As a Field Automation Engineer (FAE) at OpsMill, you’ll be the hands-on, post‑sales technical partner for a portfolio of paying customers—owning their technical health, adoption, and growth on Infrahub. Half your time will be with customers delivering Professional Services, Technical Account Management, and technical advisory; the other half will compound across the base as you build reusable assets, sharpen our AI‑assisted delivery patterns, contribute documentation, and feed recurring field signals into Product. This is not a CSM seat. FAEs are engineers first—credible sitting across from a network engineer or an architect, solving real problems, and turning that work into visible customer outcomes.

About OpsMill

OpsMill is building the next generation of infrastructure data management, focusing on helping automation teams unify data and scale automation reliably. Our platform empowers network, infrastructure, NetDevOps, and IT automation teams to manage infrastructure intent data more flexibly, predictably, and safely. As a commercial open-source company, we are practitioners who understand the real-world challenges of scaling infrastructure automation.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead Onboarding end‑to‑end—from kickoff to a live, secured, and populated Infrahub deployment—then extend with additional use cases.

  • Own a small portfolio of customer account: plan monthly engagement, run structured rituals, and act as a trusted technical partner all year.

  • Provide technical support: triage, investigate, reproduce, and escalate to Engineering; communicate crisply with customers throughout.

  • Drive technical discovery and advisory: assess environments and maturity; guide schema design, integration patterns, and architecture to unlock adoption.

  • Champion adoption and expansion: identify and shape new use cases; enable internal customer advocates; co‑present in demos and exec briefings.

  • Build reusable engineering assets—schema templates, integration patterns, deployment scripts, and shared tooling—that scale quality across customers.

  • Make AI a daily multiplier: codify prompts, patterns, and agent workflows that accelerate discovery, documentation, and delivery; contribute to our internal AI substrate.

  • Create and improve documentation and customer evidence (guides, how‑tos, reference architectures, case studies); represent OpsMill at webinars, events, and panels; feed recurring field patterns into Product and enable the SA team.

What you bring

  • 5+ years in network or infrastructure engineering and/or network automation, with hands‑on experience in production environments.

  • Practical fluency in Python and one or more of NetBox, Nautobot, Ansible, Nornir, Terraform; comfortable with APIs, data models/schemas, and GraphQL (Infrahub a plus).

  • Proven customer‑facing presence: go deep with engineers and translate for executives; deliver difficult messages without losing trust.

  • Strong bias for action: build the script, prove it, and ship it; systematic troubleshooting and pragmatic engineering judgment.

  • Proactive ownership across a small portfolio: prioritize, plan, and hold the line on technical health and adoption outcomes.

  • AI‑native work style: daily use of AI to accelerate discovery, delivery, and documentation—and a desire to teach others what works.

Nice to haves

  • Experience working vendor side is a high growth start up organisation.

  • Production experience with Infrahub or contributions to adjacent open‑source ecosystems.

  • Depth with network inventory/intent systems (e.g., NetBox/Nautobot), schema design, and data modeling.

  • Experience integrating automation with CI/CD and observability for scale and safety.

  • Relevant certifications (vendor networking, cloud) or demonstrable equivalent experience.

Location & work arrangements

  • United States; remote‑first across US time zones.

  • Domestic travel as needed for key onsite moments (kickoffs, stakeholder demos, architecture reviews); typically 20–25%.

  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.

Compensation and benefits

Competitive base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits. Specifics discussed during the process.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage

  • Flexible PTO

  • Home office setup allowance

  • Professional development budget

  • Equity in a growing commercial open-source company

  • Twice-yearly offsites in locations worth travelling to

Why OpsMill

  • The people: world-class engineers who've built and scaled automation in production. You'll be challenged daily.

The product: Infrahub is early-stage with serious technical depth. Your customer feedback shapes the roadmap directly, not through a committee, through a conversation.

The mission: making enterprise-grade infrastructure automation accessible to any organisation. Open-source at the core, production-ready out of the box. This is a multi-year journey with multiple products along the way.

The moment: infrastructure automation is at an inflection point. GitOps, IaC, and modern frameworks are everywhere, but the data layer that makes them work together is missing. We're building it. You'd be one of the first to take it to market.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

OpsMill is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
