Overview
The Virginia Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking an experienced Network Engineer to support and maintain a secure, resilient, and high-performing enterprise network infrastructure. This role is responsible for administering and troubleshooting enterprise networking technologies across office locations, data centers, and remote access environments. The ideal candidate will bring strong operational discipline, advanced troubleshooting skills, and experience supporting secure hybrid network environments within a structured enterprise setting.

Job Description
The Network Engineer will support the Virginia Office of the Attorney General’s core enterprise networking infrastructure and play a critical role in ensuring secure and reliable connectivity for agency operations. This hands-on technical role is responsible for routing, switching, firewall administration, VPN connectivity, wireless infrastructure, SD-WAN support, and network resiliency across hybrid environments.
Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure & Operations, the Network Engineer will collaborate closely with Infrastructure, Information Security, End User Services, Application/Data Services, vendors, and telecommunications providers to maintain operational stability and secure service delivery. The position requires strong experience with troubleshooting, network monitoring, structured change management, and operational governance in a complex enterprise environment.
Responsibilities
Network Infrastructure Administration
- Administer and maintain enterprise routing and switching infrastructure across multiple office locations
- Configure and support LAN, WAN, wireless, and remote access network environments
- Support hybrid MPLS and SD-WAN connectivity across enterprise locations
- Maintain network availability, resiliency, redundancy, and overall performance
- Manage VLAN configuration and enterprise TCP/IP networking environments
Firewall & Secure Connectivity Management
- Administer enterprise firewalls, VPN platforms, and secure remote access technologies
- Support network segmentation and access control implementation
- Coordinate firewall rule management and secure connectivity updates
- Support secure hybrid and cloud-connected networking environments
- Assist with secure remote connectivity initiatives and network hardening activities
Monitoring & Troubleshooting
- Monitor network health, utilization, and infrastructure performance using enterprise monitoring tools
- Troubleshoot routing, switching, VPN, wireless, and connectivity-related incidents
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for recurring issues
- Support incident response activities and infrastructure recovery efforts
- Troubleshoot carrier circuits and coordinate escalations with telecommunications providers
Security & Compliance Support
- Support vulnerability remediation and network security control implementation
- Collaborate with Information Security teams on risk reduction initiatives
- Assist with logging, monitoring, audit support, and secure configuration standards
- Support operational compliance with established governance and security procedures
Operational Support & Change Management
- Execute network changes through structured change management processes
- Participate in maintenance windows and after-hours operational support as required
- Validate planned infrastructure changes and maintain rollback procedures
- Maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, and operational records
- Prioritize multiple operational tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining service reliability
Vendor & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with vendors and telecommunications providers for provisioning, troubleshooting, and support escalations
- Partner with Systems Administration teams on infrastructure dependencies and integration efforts
- Support Application/Data Services teams with connectivity and performance troubleshooting
- Communicate operational impacts, risks, and outage information to leadership and stakeholders

- Experience supporting LAN/WAN, wireless networking, VPNs, and firewall technologies
- Ability to troubleshoot complex network connectivity and performance issues
- Experience with SD-WAN and hybrid enterprise network environments
- Familiarity with network monitoring, resiliency, and high-availability concepts
- Strong written and verbal communication skills

- 5 years of experience with routing and switching
- 5 years of experience with TCP/IP networking
- 5 years of experience troubleshooting network connectivity and performance issues
- 4 years of experience with firewall administration
- 4 years of experience supporting LAN/WAN environments
- 4 years of experience with Cisco networking technologies
- 4 years of experience using structured troubleshooting methodologies
- 3 years of experience with VLAN configuration
- 3 years of experience with VPN administration
- 3 years of experience with wireless networking administration
- 3 years of experience with network monitoring tools
- 3 years of experience with DNS fundamentals
- 3 years of experience with network performance analysis

Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of experience with BGP
- 3 years of experience with dynamic routing protocols
- 3 years of experience with advanced firewall administration
- 2 years of experience with Cisco ASA or Next-Generation Firewall technologies
- 2 years of experience with SD-WAN design and optimization
- 2 years of experience with QoS configuration
- 1 year of experience with Azure networking
- 1 year of experience with hybrid cloud networking
- 1 year of experience with Zero Trust networking concepts
- 1 year of experience with SIEM and network logging integration
- 1 year of experience with IDS/IPS technologies
- 2 years of experience working in government IT environments
- 3 years of experience supporting multi-site enterprise environments
- Relevant networking certifications such as CCNA or CCNP preferred
- Familiarity with NIST and related security frameworks preferred

Compensation
This is a 1099 Contract role.
Compensation range: $28 – $48 per hour.
