MoveOn is the largest multi-issue digital first political campaigning organization in the country. We drive rapid-response campaigns at scale. Whether its democracy, health care, foreign policy, economic justice, immigration or otherwise, MoveOn provides our members with timely ways to take action for change.

Reporting to the Chief of Program and serving as a member of the program department’s leadership team, this person will be the driving force and strategic leader of our congressional advocacy and power building strategy.

Stand out candidates for this role will have deep experience building high-trust, high-engagement relationships with members of Congress and their staff, as well as collaborating across grassroots coalition efforts to drive meaningful legislative outcomes that serve everyday people. With a comprehensive strategy that incorporates both legislative and electoral power building, the DC Director will be the front line representative of MoveOn’s membership to the leaders that they help to elect.

Responsibilities


Build and implement our strategy to leverage and grow progressive governing power in Congress.

    • Proactively mapping out legislative opportunities that align with the goals of key offices as well as our advocacy priorities and member interests.
    • Build and sustain strong relationships with members of Congress, senior staff, caucuses, coalition partners, and movement allies to drive legislative and political impact.
    • Find ways to proactively platform our champions in Congress by working with our communications, political and campaigns teams – as well as with external partners.
    • Ensuring that members of Congress have visibility into our work, and when appropriate share lessons and insights.

Build and implement our short and long term legislative policy goals and strategy

    • Working with the campaigns team, align member energy and interest in issues with timely opportunities to influence key legislation
    • Shape the short and long term legislative landscape through collaboration and support with working with key coalition partners and congressional offices
    • Partner across organizing, political, communications, and policy teams to align inside-outside strategy and maximize influence during key legislative and political moments.

Innovate new ways to create deeper connections between MoveOn members and members of Congress. Build member visibility opportunities that demonstrate the power of our members and bring members of Congress essential exposure to member priorities.

    • Organize and oversee member fly-ins to Washington, D.C., seek out and create opportunities for MoveOn members to connect with members of Congress in-district.

Represent MoveOn in Washington, D.C. at high-visibility events, engagements, and in coalition spaces

    • Rapidly develop and deliver strategic messaging, quotes, and public statements in partnership with the communications team to shape media narratives and respond to breaking political developments.
    • Partner closely with communications staff to proactively identify media opportunities and provide timely, compelling commentary for press releases, news stories, and public messaging.
    • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the communications team, helping translate complex legislative and political dynamics into clear, persuasive public narratives.

Ensure that our legislative and advocacy agendas move in lockstep with and support our organization-wide prioritiesMaintain contacts and relationships with elected officials, candidates, and campaigns

    • Attend the political team’s meetings and be a key thought partner in political strategy to ensure alignment and that we’re maximising impact.

Supervise and support MoveOn’s lobbyist to help achieve the above goals.

Required skills and experience

  • 8 years of experience engaging with members of Congress and candidates.
  • Deep experience navigating electoral campaigns and leveraging political opportunities to build power.
  • A proven track record of driving meaningful outcomes through engaging and influencing legislative processes.
  • Deep experience with managing and working within a coalition.
  • Exceptionally strong and persuasive communicator.
  • Experience working with membership based organizations.
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to organizational equity and proven ability to apply it in your work.
  • Strong internal communication skills that drive organizational-wide understanding, engagement, and alignment.
  • Acts with high integrity, professionalism, low ego, and camaraderie.
  • Experience working across an organization to achieve complex goals.
  • Deep commitment to MoveOn’s vision, mission, values, and goals.
  • Inclusive, consultative decision-maker with demonstrated commitment to listening to team members and changing course when needed based on feedback.

Reports to: Chief of Program

Location: Position is based in Washington, D.C.. May require occasional travel.

Classification, Salary and Benefits: At MoveOn, we commit to equity in our compensation philosophy and practices. We are committed to equal pay for equal work. To counter systemic compensation issues in this country and pay inequality, we have a nonnegotiable compensation practice. We utilize benchmarking and peer organization data to ensure we provide competitive nonprofit compensation and benefits. The annual salary for this position is $155,327.29. In addition to the base salary, we offer a monthly home office subsidy. We also offer an internet and phone subsidy of $2,100 annually and a health and wellness subsidy of $900 annually. All of these cash benefits are added to your bimonthly paycheck. We offer strong medical, dental, and vision benefits, which are free to employees and children of employees (spouses or domestic partners can be added at a subsidized rate). We offer employer-paid premiums for life insurance; four weeks accrued paid vacation time per year, prorated for the period that you work; 18 weeks of paid parental leave (birth, adoption, foster care placement of a child), 10 days accrued paid sick time prorated for the period that you work; paid family medical leave; and 8 staff holidays and 6 floating holidays. We contribute 5% to your 401(k) after six months of employment. We also offer a $1000 in professional development budget each year for each staff member.
