Accounting Manager
Minnesota Cannabis Services
Posted about 3 hours ago
At Minnesota Cannabis Services, we’re not just building businesses — we’re building the people who make them great. Our team partners with leading operators across cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, and retail to deliver world-class expertise in legal, finance, analytics, marketing, HR, and technology.
We’re looking for professionals who take pride in their work, move with purpose, and thrive in fast-changing environments. The kind of people who hold themselves to high standards, think creatively, and find satisfaction in solving hard problems.
When you join our team, you’ll work alongside some of the most experienced leaders in the industry — professionals who share their knowledge freely and lead by example. You’ll be challenged, supported, and trusted to take ownership of meaningful work that shapes the future of one of the fastest-growing industries in America.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Controller who wants to build.
We’re a multi-state cannabis services organization managing operations across five states with aggressive growth plans, and we need the person who will own the financial infrastructure that makes that growth possible.
Your job is to take ownership of all of it — the monthly close, consolidation, AP/AR, treasury, cash management, audit preparation, and team development — and turn it into a department that operates with accuracy, speed, and independence.
This is a role for someone who wants to design the process, build the team, and create the financial backbone for a company scaling to an enterprise level.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for an Accounting Manager who makes the close happen.
Minnesota Cannabis Services is a multi-state cannabis services organization with a large, complex entity portfolio spanning multiple states.
This is a hands-on accounting management role. You’ll personally close the most complex entities while supervising staff accountants on the rest. You’ll also coordinate with an offshore processing team handling AP and transactional work. If you’re the kind of person who thrives on organization, holds people accountable, and gets satisfaction from a clean close — this role was built for you.
What You’ll Own
Monthly Close Execution
You own the close calendar. You assign tasks to staff accountants with clear deadlines, track progress daily, and ensure every entity closes on time. You personally handle close tasks for the most complex entities that require deeper accounting knowledge. When a reconciliation doesn’t tie or a journal entry doesn’t make sense, you investigate and figure it out to ensure every entity is clean and auditable.
Staff Supervision & Development
You directly manage a team of staff accountants. You assign their daily work, review their journal entries and reconciliations, give feedback on quality and accuracy, and hold them accountable for deadlines. When someone is struggling, you coach them. When someone is excelling, you give them more complex work. You’re building a team that can handle an increasing volume of entities without the quality dropping.
Offshore Team Coordination
An offshore processing team handles accounts payable, bank reconciliation preparation, and transactional bookkeeping. You’re their day-to-day escalation point for accounting workflow questions — coding issues, exception handling, and process clarification. You don’t manage their people, but you own the quality of their accounting output.
Work Product Quality Assurance
You review and approve all journal entries, account reconciliations, and GL maintenance. You spot errors, catch inconsistencies, and ensure documentation standards are met across every entity. You also identify recurring mistakes and process gaps — and you fix them, not just flag them.
Audit & Documentation Support
You support audit preparation by ensuring workpapers are organized, documentation is complete, and PBC (provided by client) schedules are ready when auditors request them. You maintain organized financial records across all entities so that audit season is a breeze, not a fire drill.
What We’re Looking For
Required:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with multi-entity or multi-location exposure
- Direct experience managing or executing month-end close across multiple entities
- Experience supervising accounting staff — assigning work, reviewing output, managing performance
- Strong GAAP knowledge with hands-on experience preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online or comparable accounting platforms (Intacct, NetSuite, Xero)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
Strongly Preferred:
- CPA or CPA-eligible a plus
- Experience in highly regulated industries — cannabis, hospitality, restaurant groups, or franchise operations
- Experience working alongside offshore or distributed accounting teams
- Advanced Excel proficiency including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial analysis
Who Thrives in This Role
You’re organized to the point where other people find it slightly intimidating. You track deadlines without being reminded. You catch errors that others miss. You hold your team accountable without being a micromanager — you set clear expectations, review work thoroughly, and address issues directly when the bar isn’t met.
You’re not looking for a role where you inherit a polished process and maintain it. You want to build the process — design the close calendar, establish the review cadence, define what “done” looks like for every entity, and train your team to deliver it consistently. You’re comfortable doing the work yourself while simultaneously building the team and systems that will eventually scale without you touching every entry.
Growth Path
This role has a clear trajectory. As the entity portfolio grows and the accounting function matures, this position can expand into a Senior Accounting Manager or Controller role with broader scope, including consolidation responsibilities and direct involvement in audit and financial reporting. We invest in people who deliver results, and advancement is earned through performance.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $100,000 – $115,000, commensurate with experience
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k)
- Paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays
- Employee assistance program (EAP)
