About Sonder

At Sonder, we believe every person deserves to feel safe, supported, and empowered to be at their best — wherever they are. We’re redefining workplace health, safety, and wellbeing through a seamless blend of technology and human expertise. Our mobile platform provides 24/7, real-time support from safety, medical, and mental health professionals, and in critical situations we go beyond digital — deploying on-the-ground assistance when it matters most.

Since our founding in 2017, Sonder has grown rapidly across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. Backed by Seek and Blackbird, we now support 1,000,000+ members and are on a mission to scale globally.

About the Role

This is the perfect role for a technically strong Financial Accountant who thrives on ownership, precision, and operating across multiple jurisdictions. You’ll support end-to-end financial controllership across Sonder’s AU, NZ, and UK entities - covering compliance, statutory filings, financial close, and payroll-related activities where required, with direct access to the Financial Controller and CFO.

If you enjoy variety, accountability, and getting things done without layers of bureaucracy, this role will suit you well.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own all compliance and statutory filings across AU, NZ, and UK - BAS, VAT/IRD, payroll tax, FBT, TPAR, superannuation, Workcover, and Maxxia obligations, submitted accurately and on time, every time.
  • Drive month-end close across payroll, compliance, and expense activities, including reconciliations, accruals, and commentary, consistently delivered within 5 business days.
  • Review payables prepared by the Bookkeeper and provide cashflow commentary to support FC and CFO decision-making.
  • Maintain audit readiness by upholding internal controls, governance frameworks, and accurate reconciliations, and support external audit processes as required.
  • Oversee the Bookkeeper’s administration of expense platforms (Weel and Navan) and provide management commentary on expenses and payables.
  • Step in to support revenue reconciliations and debtors reporting during peak periods or when coverage is needed.

What You Bring

  • 3–5 years’ experience in financial accounting, audit, or assurance, ideally with exposure to payroll, compliance, and statutory reporting.
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CA/CPA qualified or working towards it.
  • Strong working knowledge of month-end close processes, statutory filings, and multi-entity accounting.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting systems such as Xero or NetSuite, and strong Excel skills.
  • Background in a Big Four or mid-tier professional services firm with multi-jurisdiction exposure (AU, NZ, UK) is highly regarded.
  • You pick up existing processes quickly, execute to a high standard with limited onboarding time, and escalate early when issues arise.
  • Organised, highly accountable, and comfortable managing multiple compliance deadlines without close direction.

Experience and Requirements

  • Permission to work in Australia.
  • Current National Police Check and Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain).
  • Familiarity with expense management platforms (e.g., Weel, Navan) is an advantage.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior finance staff is a bonus, but not essential.
