### Your Opportunity

Under the limited supervision of the Manager, Library & Learning Commons Operations, and in coordination with Librarians, Library Coordinators, Library Technicians, and other campus service areas, the Library Technician, Public Services is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operation of public services in the Library and Learning Commons and for providing exceptional customer service to Library and Learning Commons users. The person assists users with library and learning commons processes, including circulation and borrower services, opening and closing the Library and Learning Commons, and maintaining and providing access to the library collection. The person supports technical services by processing library materials, performing serials and acquisitions duties, and assisting with the creation and maintenance of metadata and catalogue records. The person works with Library Coordinators, Technicians, Librarians, and the Manager to ensure adequate service coverage and they support the training of student employees. As directed, uses Social Media and the College’s communication channels to develop and share promotional content and news stories related to library programs, services, and resources. Completes project work as assigned.

### Functions and Duties
  1. Assists all library users, including students, employees and community users electronically, in-person, and by phone; handles queries in a sensitive and timely manner and refers complex matters to the Coordinator, Public Services, Librarians, the Manager, or other service areas as appropriate; answers directional questions and general inquiries regarding the library or general campus services; communicates library policies or procedures to users.
  2. Assists users to locate materials, search for information using the online catalogue, research databases, and online sources, properly cite sources, use library equipment including photocopiers and printers, and assists with routine software or user account questions.
  3. Processes requests for physical and electronic library material from users, ensuring materials are delivered in the most efficient manner; prepares intercampus deliveries.
  4. Charges, discharges, and renews library materials and other equipment
  5. Maintains and accesses library accounts and records, flags accounts for overdue items.
  6. Assists users with room and appointment bookings.
  7. Collects and records payments, fines and fees
  8. Supports technical services by assisting with acquisitions, processing, and maintenance of electronic and physical books, serials, media, and other materials; unpacks shipments and verifies against invoices, receives items, assigns barcodes, labels materials, and adds holding and item records to the Library Services Platform; prepares processed material for intercampus delivery; assists with maintaining processing procedures manual; makes minor repairs to library materials and refers other damaged materials to the librarian for assessment; communicates with Technical Services staff on problems related to the collection.
  9. Assists the Coordinator, Public Services in the handling of interlibrary loan (ILL) requests; verifies ILL requests and selects appropriate locations; requests external ILL materials as required; receives, processes and returns ILL materials and notifies patrons as required; provides ILL materials to requesting libraries.
  10. Assists with the maintenance of collections including shelving and shelf reading of materials, preparing boxes, collection inventory, and deselection procedures.
  11. Records statistics on public service interactions and space use
  12. Ensures appropriate maintenance of public service area facilities, technology and equipment by reporting technical or software issues, placing work or IT requests, and coordinating with appropriate service areas.
  13. As directed, uses Social Media and the College’s communication channels to manage and develop promotional content and news stories related to library programs, services, resources, and expertise; promotes library programs and services through the creation of displays, resources, and handouts, as assigned.
  14. In the absence of the Coordinator, Public Services, or when assigned, is responsible for the overall operation of the library and learning commons, including library opening and closing procedures, assisting with coordination and scheduling of circulation activities, updating library hours information, and collecting and accounting for payments in the public services area.  
  15. Monitors student employees in the absence of the Coordinator, Public Services, Librarians, other Library Technicians, and the Manager; communicates issues to librarians or the Manager.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned
### Education and Experience

Completion of a 2-year Library Technician Diploma. A minimum of 1-year related library experience.

Experience working with digital or physical collections and/or metadata/cataloguing is an asset. Additional post-secondary education in a related field is an asset.

### Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service, to handle user complaints and suggestions, and to resolve conflict
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and MS Teams).
  • Aptitude for learning and working with new systems and software.
  • Knowledge of library systems and services, research processes, online search techniques, and strategies to mitigate dis/misinformation
  • Proficiency in the use of digital technologies such as library services platforms, eBook and/or audiobook platforms, library databases, and Learning Management Systems.
  • Ability to work effectively independently, with limited supervision, and as part of a distributed team.
  • Flexible when managing conflicting priorities and a high volume of work to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated organizational skills that reflect attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to lift/move objects up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift/move objects up to 25 and including 50 pounds.
